Let's take another look at the 70's:

*Los Jaivas (Chile, since 1963). Folk, rock and prog. These two moving and famous songs are Todos juntos ("All Together", 1972) and Mira niñita ("Look, my Little Girl", 1972).

*Módulos
(Spain, 1969-1979). Prog and symphonic rock. Todo tiene su fin ("Everything has its End", 1969) and Realidad ("Reality", 1970).

*Lone Star (Spain, 1966-1977). Many styles (rock & roll, prog, blues rock, pop-rock, hard rock, etc.). Adelante ("Let's Go!", 1973) and Pájaro de fuego ("Firebird", 1972).

Ladies and gentlemen: attention, please! A bunch of heavyweights is coming. Essential. In fact, I'd say that if you don't know who the following guys are, then you don't have a decent knowledge of Spanish-language rock at a global level. Capish?

*Madrid (Spain), late 70's: in the working-class neighborhoods, many good bands arose. They sang about that social environment and its daily life (injustice, drugs, juvenile delinquency, social problems, youth's life, etc.). This rock music was called rock urbano ("urban rock"). Leño (1977-1983) is probably its most important and influential act.

These two songs are El tren ("The Train", 1979) and ¡Corre, corre! ("Run Along, Run Along!", 1982):

El tren

♫ "El tren. ................................ The train.
Sube a mi tren azul. ................................ Get on my blue train!
Su dulce chimenea te puede dar ................................ Its sweet chimney can give you
algo que hace tiempo buscas tú. ................................ something you've been looking for.
Si controlas tu viaje serás feliz. ................................ If you control your trip you'll be happy.

El tren. ................................ The train.
Un día yo quise viajar en él. ................................ One day I wanted to travel by train.
Subí despacio y me acomodé. ................................ I boarded it slowly and I got settled.
Ví rostros deshechos de satisfacción. ................................ I saw faces brimming with satisfaction.
Si controlas tu viaje serás feliz. ................................ If you control your trip you'll be happy.

El tren. ................................ The train.
Después de latir a velocidad ................................ After beating fast
ya va lento a su final ................................ it slowly moves on to its destination
y casi no sabes cuándo va a parar. ................................ and you hardly know when it will stop.
Si controlas tu viaje serás feliz. ................................ If you control your trip you'll be happy." ♫

(Did you get the "psychotropic metaphors"?)

These are Castigo ("Punishment", 1979) and an awesome live performance of Este Madrid ("This Madrid", 1979; chorus says "Madrid is a sh*t, where not even the rats can live"):

Sorprendente ("Surprising", 1982) and Sí señor, sí señor ("Yes Sir, Yes Sir", 1980):

And also (click): El oportunista ("The Opportunist"), Aprendiendo a escuchar ("Learning to Listen"), Todo es más sencillo ("Everything is Easier"), Entre las cejas ("Between the Eyes"), ¡Qué desilusión! ("How Disappointing!"), Mientras tanto ("Meanwhile"), Sodoma y chabola ("Sodom and shanty") and in general their entire discography.

To be continued....

Later on we'll see more topnotch bands from the 80's and 90's. But now, as I promised, a few more songs by Nudozurdo, this fantastic alternative rock-band that has captivated me lately. So turn the volume up and enjoy, people.

The first of their three albums was titled Nudozurdo (2002, re-released in 2010). Here we can find the group's characteristic features, including those metaphorical (and often surrealistic) lyrics. These two songs are Dentro de él ("Inside of Him") and Viaja hacia mí ("Travel to Me"). I can't deny that, somehow, I feel identified with the former (I'm a helpless neurotic).

Dentro de él
♫ "Le sudaban las manos, ................................ He had sweaty palms,
no podía correr ................................ he couldn't run away
porque quien le perseguía ................................ because the pursuer
estaba dentro de él. ................................ was inside of him.

No quería estar solo, ................................ He didn't want to be lonely,
intentaba romper ................................ he tried to break open
el candado de ideas ................................ the padlock of thoughts
que jugaba con él. ................................ that toyed with him.

Dentro de él... ................................ Inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...

Se quedaba en un sitio, ................................ He used to stay somewhere for a while,
le gustaba aprender ................................ he liked to learn
a defenderse del miedo ................................ to overcome his fear
y a acostarse con él. ................................ and to sleep with it.

Se inventaba mentiras ................................ He concocted delusions
que quería creer. ................................ that he wanted to believe in.
En su mente hay un ruido ................................ In his mind there is a noise
que vive dentro de él. ................................ that lives inside of him.
Dentro de él. ................................ Inside of him.

Dentro de él... ................................ Inside of him...
dentro de él... ................................ inside of him...
" ♫

Ilumina tu cuerpo ("Light Up Your Body") and Laser Love (from third album Tara Motor Hembra):

Ilumina tu cuerpo

♫ "Atraca a tus padres, ................................ Mug your parents,
dí a todo que sí. ................................ say yes to everything.
Manipula tus sueños, ................................ Manipulate your dreams,
prohíbe reír. ................................ ban the laughing.

Inventa mentiras ................................ Make up lies
que vigilen tu voz. ................................ that keep watch over your voice.
Hay tortura sin sangre: ................................ There is bloodless torture:
utiliza el dolor. ................................ make use of pain.

Revienta mil puertas. ................................ Kick 1,000 doors down.
Cítate con Dios, ................................ Make an appointment with God,
dispárale en el cerebro ................................ shoot him in the head
y róbale el corazón. ................................ and steal his heart.

Imita a tus padres, ................................ Imitate your parents,
hazles reír. ................................ make them laugh.
Pierde el norte despacio, ................................ Lose your bearings slowly,
finge sentir. ................................ pretend you're sensitive.

Disimula tus miedos, ................................ Hide your fears,
ofrece tu yugular. ................................ offer you jugular.
Pregunta por dónde ................................ Ask how to get
se llega hasta el final. ................................ to the end.

Hazte la muerta, ................................ Pretend to be dead,
corónate. ................................ crown yourself.
Ilumina tu cuerpo ................................ Light up your body
o deshazte de él. ................................ or get rid of it.

Prometiste ser bueno, ................................ You promised you would be a good guy
algo malo pasó. ................................ but something bad happened.
Teledirige a un amigo, ................................ Drive a friend through remote control,
cómprale su voz. ................................ buy the voice from him.

Prometiste ser bueno, ................................ You promised you would be a good guy
algo malo pasó. ................................ but something bad happened.
Teledirige a un amigo, ................................ Drive a friend through remote control,
cómprale su voz. ................................ buy the voice from him.

Seduce a tu novia, ................................ Captivate your girlfriend,
hazle entender ................................ make her understand
que es tu propio cerebro ................................ that it is your own brain
el que ahora vas a vender. ................................ the one that you're going to sell now.

Espera el momento, ................................ Wait for the right moment,
disimulas muy bien. ................................ you're very good at hiding things.
Átame como a un perro ................................ Tie me up as if I were a dog
hasta que muera de sed. ................................ until I die of thirst.

Thanks. And indeed, Ferrol is a great song. For those who don't know, Ferrol is a beautiful Galician city to which the song is dedicated:

Other two hits by Los Limones: Trenes sin destino ("Trains With no Destination", 1990) and El tiempo pasará ("Time Goes By", 1990).

(chorus)

♫ “En trenes sin destino.................In trains with no destination
se juntan los caminos............................
the ways that go to the heart
que van al corazón..................meet together." ♫

*Another big name: Burning (since 1977; though the two main members died in 1987 and 1997, respectively). This is an extremely important band. First-class rock en español.

- ¿Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como este? ("What is a Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?", 1979) and Mueve tus caderas ("Move Your Body", 1979):

♫ "¿Qué hace una chica como tú ................................ What is a girl like you doing
en un sitio como este? ................................ in a place like this?
¿Qué clase de aventura ................................ What kind of adventure
has venido a buscar? ................................ are you looking for?

Los años te delatan, nena; ................................ Your age gives you away, baby;
estás fuera de sitio. ................................ you're out of place.
Vas de caza: ................................ You go hunting:
¿a quién vas a atrapar? ................................ who are you going to catch?

No utilices ................................ Don't play
tus juegos conmigo. ................................ your games with me.

Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas. ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble.
Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas. ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble.

¿Qué tienes en los ojos, nena? ................................ Is there something in your eye, baby?
¿O es que vas a llorar? ................................ Or maybe you're about to cry?
Ya sé que alguien pisó tu orgullo ................................ I know that someone hurt your pride
en un oscuro portal. ................................ in a dark and gloomy doorway.

No intentes atraparme, ................................ Don't try to catch me,
he aprendido a volar. ................................ I've learnt to fly away.

¿Qué hace una chica como tú ................................ What is a girl like you doing
en un sitio como este? ................................ in a place like this?
(X 3)

Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas. ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble.
Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas. ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble.

Mujer fatal, este no es tu sitio. ................................ Femme fatale, this isn't your place.
Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas. ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble.

Mujer fatal, siempre con problemas... ................................ Femme fatale, always in trouble...
" ♫

- No es extraño que tú estés loca por mí ("It's Hardly Surprising You're Mad About Me"; listen to the splendid unplugged version too) and Esto es un atraco ("This is a Robbery"):

- Una noche sin ti ("A Night Without You", 1984) and Puedes sentirlo ("You Can Feel It", 1979):

Puedes sentirlo

♫ "Óyeme, nena:.............Listen to me, baby:
rompe tus cadenas...........................break free from your chains.
Vamos a hacerlo.........................We'll do it
como tu prefieras....................as you like.

Si es que realmente....................If you are really
puedes ver las estrellas,...................... able to see the stars,
tengo la llave caliente.................I've got the hot key
que abre tu paraíso...................that opens your paradise.

Puedes sentirlo.....................You can feel it.
Puedes sentirlo, oh, sí!...................You can feel it, oh, yeah!....

(...)" ♫

And also (click): Jim Dinamita, Madrid, Rock & Roll Mama, Hey nena, Seducción ("Seduction") and many others. There is a complilation (Lo que el tiempo no borró, 1998), a superb live album from 1991 (En directo) and an unplugged album (Dulces dieciséis, 2005; very recommended too).

Default Spanish music

I can also recommend Cola Jet Set ( e.g.- En este pista ya..) , a kind of funny, 60's style band, and also Russian Red, who is Spanish although she does tend to sing in English.

I'm really interested in any music scenes that are non-English-speaking. I don't know much about Spanish language music but I'm happy that this thread exists! All those posts by Zabarqal look very interesting, I hope i have time to go through all of them.

Has anybody mentioned Hundergrum? They are an excellent record label specialized in Spanish psychedelic rock music from the past decades. I have their compilation "Acid Rumba: Gipsy Grooves 1969-1976" and it's very very good! Here's a short description of the compilation I found from the web: "Long-haired session musicians armed with electric guitars and drums started to get involved with flamenco and rumba singers, creating an explosive sound: fuzz & wah guitars, Moogs and Farfisa, drum breaks and soulish horns blend with exotic flamenco & rumba percussions and raw vocals."

And now...

* Obús (since 1981). Va a estallar el obús ("The Bombshell is About to Explode", 1981) and Pesadilla nuclear ("Nuclear Nightmare"):

Salvajemente sexy ("Wildly Sexy") and El que más ("The Best One", 1984):

And (click) Te visitará la muerte ("Death Will Visit You"), F.M., Autopista ("Highway", 1984), Dinero, dinero ("Money, Money"), Viviré ("I Will Live It Up"), Alguien ("Someone", 1984), etc. There is a compilation album titled Vamos muy bien (2006).

To be continued...
