I wasn't even aware that Jeff Bridges put out a movie last year :/ Maybe I should start watching TV again.... but I will definitely give this soundtrack a spin.

Anybody heard of a band called son volt? I found them on the same blog I found Kate Mann, it's got some Jim White for download too, as well as a Hellwood album. An americana jackpot. I still havent downloaded everything I want from that site yet. One inconvenience though, is that it uses Rapidshare. Which we all know( or at least, I do) sucks.

I found that same blog a while back and had fun going through the archives. It hasn't been too active in a while though. Another site that's also been somewhat inactive but has an interesting archive is Good Music Stuff. I always check out Daytrotter, HearYa, and Laundromatinee for DLs of new artists (and some not so new). One could spend years going through the live recordings on archive.org
Son Volt is part of that whole Whiskeytown/Uncle Tupelo/Jeff Tweedy/Jay Farrar/Ryan Adams circle that some consider to be at the forefront of the Americana/No Depression movement. Wikipedia them for the family trees. I wasn't a fan of Rapidshare either until I recently ponied up for a 30 day subscription. It was an entirely different universe - no waiting, multiple simultaneous DLs, etc. One could get really spoiled. If I ran across another site with a lot of stuff in the archives that I wanted I think I'd just pay the $6.99 (I think it was) for another month. Savannah: are you getting over to SXSW this year? |

I found all of the sites except for Good Music Stuff. That's ok though. I'm not really sure why americana gets classified as indie, it's been around longer than pop, and rock. I guess it's just different.I don't like spending money on computer stuff, but I'll consider the subscription. I've heard Uncle Tupelo, they aren't that bad. Influenced by Nick Cave, obviously. I downloaded a Son Volt greatest hits type album, I have yet to listen to it though.

I realized that I totally forgot Wilco in that circle.
try goodmusicstuffs.blogspot. Last post was the Agnostic Gospel Choir back in October. Right now I'm checking out a band called the Renderers that seem pretty decent. |
