thanks for the prompt responses! can i offer any of you some bourbon crow? i have their 2006 album "highway to hangovers". in case you don't already know, bourbon crow is the country side project of wednesday 13, the frontman for the horror punk band frankenstein drag queens from planet 13.

Berni 05-08-2010 05:50 PM

Did you receive anything besides "death row hoedown"? 'Cause that's the only one I've got.
I've got Bourbon Crow's "Long Way to the Bottom", too.

jack the stripper 05-08-2010 06:02 PM

hah no, you and pete both sent me death row hoedown. thanks again. so you have obviously heard of bourbon crow. but do you have their first album? you mentioned that you have "long way to the bottom", but do you have "highway to hangover"? if not, i will gladly send it to you.

Berni 05-08-2010 10:32 PM

I've got "highway to hangover", thanks. Do you have "Long Way to the Bottom"?

I'd also sent you the Muleskinner Jones' track "Blood & Muskets" from a Rodentia compilation.

jack the stripper 05-09-2010 03:29 PM

i do not have long way to the bottom, but i'm running low on space so i'm not too desperate for it at this point in my life. in other news, have any of you guys heard about this guy?

Phantom of the Black Hills on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

All Muleskinner Jones LPs and CDs are available (cheap) from the artist's own website (a Google on 'Muleskinner Jones' will get you there). Also on emusic, itunes, and most other download sites. Get 'em ;)

Think there are some free downloads on last.fm too, just search there for Muleskinner Jones.

I would have posted direct links but, this being my first post, the forum won't let me!

Couple of my favourite LPs that I think fit loosely into the 'Gothic Country' cannon would be The Violent Femmes 'Hallowed Ground' (they practically invented the genre with 'Country Death Song' way back in the mid 80s) and Johnny Dowd's 'Pictures From Life's Other Side'.

cheers

Berni 05-11-2010 07:03 AM

Murder by Death does a Smashing Pumpkins cover - "We Only Come Out at Night" - and it's posted at "The Cover Lovers".

jack the stripper 05-12-2010 11:15 AM

hey, berni. i just got "always say please & thank you" if you're interested.

Berni 05-12-2010 09:16 PM

Thanks Jack, that's awesome!

jack the stripper 05-12-2010 10:38 PM

no problem. i just sent it to you in a private message, let me know if it works. i made sure that they were mp3s also.

Berni 05-13-2010 06:27 AM

Tho' I forgot to say "please", I "always say... thank you"

Ninebullets.net has a post on Dad Horse Experience with 3 MP3s. Use the archive search to bring it up.

I assume they wouldn't read this if they agree with me, but is anyone put off by the title of this thread?

Why would they be? There isn't anything offensive in it. What reason would they have?

What I meant was, its sort of a mish-mash. It doesn't really give you a direction and it seems to me if you're not into this style of music, you'd be looking for a path to go down. Instead we're throwing them in the deep end.

Honestly, I'm sure I'd love a lot of whats suggested here but I don't have the time to try something I think I'll hate. More descriptions please?

Berni 06-15-2010 08:57 AM

Oh, ok. Well, It's sort of like the tag line on No Depression magazine "...whatever that is." Genre labels are a handy shorthand, but are inherently problematic. I myself have a hard time classifying the music we talk about on this site because oftentimes what I like about this music is the juxtaposition of styles in often unexpected ways. And I often can't quite put my finger on the influences and instrumentation like my son, who is a musician, can. So rather than sounding like an idiot, I tend to shy away from detailed reviews/descriptions. So if it seems like a mish-mash, it's because it is! Also, I think that people who like music which is a composite of styles tend to also like the styles on which it's based. So if I like punkabilly, I'll probably also tend to like rockabilly. Some of the artists that get mentioned here aren't really gothic country but fall under the general taste umbrella of gothic country, etc. fans.

Amazon.com: Gospel Haunted: Those Poor Bastards: Music

If I wasn't dirt poor, I'd have gotten it a month and a half ago. But, seeing as I can't afford it, I'll just have to wait until it pops up on the internet somewhere for free download. I'd really like to buy the vinyls, maybe someday.

jack the stripper 06-16-2010 11:01 AM

you're in luck! look what i just found:

Those Poor Bastards – Gospel Haunted « Below The Fog

Ah, another band that I have been looking for, and would recommend, is JB Nelson. Keep an eye out!

Berni 06-25-2010 10:20 PM

You can get “Animal Extracts” by JB Nelson FREE at www.devilsruinrecords.com/animalextracts.zip

Monk 06-26-2010 01:06 AM

There's lots. Browse back through this thread and take note of recurring artists. I started with 16 Horsepower, Elliott Brood, and O'Death and went from there.

Does anyone have The Dedringers – Sweetheart of the Neighborhood or Jeff Finlin – Ballad of a Plain Man?

staurtjohn321 07-07-2010 12:51 AM

Thats me. I love all the sub genres of country music.

Berni 07-26-2010 09:14 AM

Has anyone heard the new Woven Hand release?

Built With Bones is my favourite, but I've heard a lot of good things about Defiant

4ZZZ 08-26-2010 05:38 PM

Thanks for this Pete and also thank Christian Williams for his kind generosity. On my rare forays back to this forum this is the 1st thread I look at. A credit to you.

gnarf 10-19-2010 07:17 AM

Just how new is this release? And, what is the new Munly release called? And thanks, LoathsomePete, for the Christian Williams stuff.

stupidheader 10-22-2010 08:08 PM

Hey, have you seen the new Loathsome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks album? It's like a 3 cd album. His Holy Spooks work is a little calmer than Those Poor Bastards., but I'm looking forward to listening.

stupidheader 10-26-2010 04:16 PM

Your music sucks. Terribly. To the point that I think you are just messing with people. It's that bad. No. It's worse.

LoathsomePete 10-26-2010 04:24 PM

Please don't quote spammers, it just doubles the clean up I have to do.

Also it really did suck.
