Any outlaw country fans out there?
I really don't like new country at all, but Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck and Hank Jr. are my HEROES.
You really have to admire their story about not conforming to the Nashville scene and playing their music the way they want to play it. and then sticking it to Nashville cause they made it big without them. I've proud to say that I've seen Willie Nelson twice in concert and he was absolutely great. I was wondering at first if he would be as good as he was back in the old days (because he is so old now). he was as good if better in concert. I've also seen Merle Haggard at concert. his guitar playing was good but i think he had nipped into the booz earlier before the show and he kept forgetting the words to his songs. It seems like these old outlaws aren't a big topic of interest on this site, but I was just wondering if anybody else is a big fan. Tell me who you've seen in concert, whos your favorite outlaw, favorite song ect. |
What do you mean by "new country"?

I love Merle, Paycheck, DAC and the like.
But you can't say all new country's bad. There's Hank III, Bob Wayne, Wayne Hancock, Hellbound Glory(shameless promotion), and others. Don't even get me started on Those Poor Bastards, The .357 String Band, Split Lip Rayfield, and the Pine Box Boys, now that's some kick ass music. |
I like alot of the New Nashville stuff, but I love the old Outlaw sound too.
I saw Willie in concert a few times. His harmonica player, Mickey Raphael is one of the few serious harmonica players around today. I also saw ThE Highwaymen at Wembley. Incredible to think only two of them are still alive! Waylon had a wonderful voice & some kickin' tunes. "Don't You think This Outlaw Stuffs done got out of hand" & several others Waylon didn't like the term outlaw, it was thought up by their PR person. But it helped define a sound within country music. Waylon once said "Willies idea of being an outlaw is double parking on Music Row" |
