It goes both ways. Back a couple of decades Reba McEntire did a soul-type album, "REBA" which included a cover of aretha franklins' "Respect". T Graham Brown has long had his feet in both Country & soul.

If country fans feel that country represents for an artist a way to stay alive in the industry, they will reject it.
