I enjoy Tracy Chapman. I'm in agreement that I wouldn't classify her as 'folk' music, in the traditional sense of the word. Yes, her social commentary and acoustic arrangements are the stuff of classic folk music, but I find her to be a bit more powerful, stepping slightly outside the folk music box, with a heavier drumbeat (when need be) to emphisize the emotional strings the lyrics are intended to pull. Which is the opposite of any 'normal' folk song, where, when there are drums, they are merely an afterthought, to keep time.
I think she is a breath of fresh air, compared to the posers out there today. She pays attention to her music. She's wonderfully understated in her vocals, which are a lesson in harnessing strength in order to make the song work. Too often, vocalists give it their all on every song, which detracts from the aura of the song. In some cases, it kills the song completely. "Look atme, how great I sing!" T.C. has never been guilty of stealing the show. She is one of a rare breed that understands the vocals are simply another instrument used to create a work of art. She has a great voice, but no ego.

Yep I love her. I also thought she was a he, when I first heard her.
Again I gotta agree with most people here who say Fast Car is a great Song. And I also like Give Me One Reason. She has a great voice.
