You know honestly I think M. Ward is an atroctiy the way he rips things off so poorly, but whatever...
Mike Ness - Don't think twice (I love this) The White Stripes - One more cup of coffee It might be obligatory to mention: Hendrix - Watchtower Actually Dave Matthews Band covers that one quite well too |
The Honorary Title - Simple Twist of Fate

Hendrix of course!
But GNR's cover of Knocking on Heaven's Door is an all time great! Considering Bob now uses their arrangement for it when he performs it. I also Like The Rolling Stone's cover of Like a Rolling Stone off there album Stripped. |

"Dear Landlord" - Janis Joplin I can't think of any others I like right now. |
Cat Power
"He Was A Friend of Mine." "Moon Shiner." "Hard Times In New York Town." "Knockin' On Heaven' Door." "House of the Rising Sun." "Paths of Victory." Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower." |
At least "Moonshiner" and "House of the Rising Sun" predate Dylan as well although I suppose you could say he brought them to the public's attention.
My favorite is probably "I Shall Be Released" by either the Band or Chrissie Hynde or "Ring Them Bells" by Ron Sexsmith, Sheryl Crow and Elvis Costello. |
Guns N Roses, but i'm not sure of the dialogue of the phone part has a story, but it kind of annoys me. Great song, both original and cover.
|
I like this Spanish cover of Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, by Kiko Veneno and Juan Perro.
A comment I've seen in one of the YouTube videos of it (I translate): "Considering how stroppy he is, if Dylan finds out about this, he sends a pair of thugs to Kiko's home." |
One of the all-time great Bob Dylan covers.
The O'Jays ~ Emotionally Yours |
The Hold Steady- Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?
Antony and Bryce Dessner- I Was Young When I Left Home |
Willie Nelson and Calexico - Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)
|

The Byrds' version of You Ain't Going Nowhere takes it for me...
And the album it's from is absolutely immense too. |
There's a version that i have and i don't know where it comes from which isn't the album version and is a lot louder and angrier, that would be my pick. |
:basketbal |
Jeez so many i like but heres a couple of my favorites.
Jerry Garcia - Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) George Harrison - If Not For You |
Tangled up in Blue
Lay lady Lay and of course: Knocking on Heaven's Door (you can find many extra verses of this ala grateful dead) |
...I had the vinyl of Any Day Now...when it got to cd it was Baez sings Dylan...I wore that album out...I Love Joan Baez singing any Dylan songs...
this song wasn't on it...but one of my favourites...Forever Young by Joan Baez... ******* may Your Hands always be busy... ...may Your Feet always be swift and may You have a firm foundation... ...when the winds of changes shift may Your Heart always be joyful... ...and may Your Songs always be sung and may You stay...forever young... |
Julie Driscoll & Trinity - This Wheel's On Fire
Manfred Mann Band - The Mighty Quinn Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower The Byrds - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere Fairport Convention - IF you Wanna Go, Go Now (forgot it's Cajun name) Johnny Cash - It Ain't Me, Babe |
Before I get flamed for this, listen to it. It's actually really good.
Never Shout Never- It Ain't Me, Babe |
also The Flying Burrito Bros - If You Gotta Go
|
|
...try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm... ...come in...she said I'll give You...shelter from the storm... |
I`m not really a fan of Dylan covers. A lot of the ones I`ve heard never seem to struggle out from under the giant shadow cast by Dylan`s own originals: IMO most of his songs are so permeated with his personality that it`s difficult for another artist`s interpretation to take.
So the cover versions I like are generally of Dylan`s less epic songs, where he has left a bit of room for someone else to add something to the song. Most of the ones I`m thinking of are on Il Duce`s list : Quote:
Time Passes Slowly by Judy Collins You Angel You by Manfred Mann It`s All Over Now Baby Blue by Van Morrison |
The Turtles - It Ain't Me Babe
Aaron Neville - I Shall Be Released |
I'm surprised no one has said You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go by Madeline Peyroux.
Definitely my favorite. |
love this cover.
instrumental version- |
man, I hate that song played slowly. You have to get the Planet Waves version.

I can't stand that Turtles cover. There's a funny clip of Dylan talking about how his songs have been covered so many times in the film "No Direction Home". "The Byrds covered a song...uhh, some band called The Turtles?..."

Back on the subject of Calexico, this might be a rather obvious choice of Dylan covers, but for me it`s one that actually packs more of an emotional punch than the original. I love the broken-hearted way he sings "Gonna have some fun" - like he`s yearning for something that we know is going to end badly ! |
If the turtles had more ambient sound in their music, they'd look like every other hipster dive bar band going today.
|
My favourite is Guns n Roses cover of Knocking on Heavens Door, but I love The Byrds cover of Mr Tamberine man as well.
