I'd say the top are Rory Gallagher, The Pogues, Thin Lizzy, U2

Folk:

The Chieftains
The Dubliners
The High Kings
The Irish Descendants
The Irish Rovers

Punk:

The Tossers
Flogging Molly
The Dreadnoughts
The Young Dubliners
The Mahones
The Pogues
The Real McKenzies
Siobhan
Street Dogs (some Irish influence but more punk than Irish)

Most of these are traditional Irish folk or Celtic Punk. Hope it helps anyone wanting to get into either of them.

Two of the most musical Irish acts, together:

Van Morrison and the Chieftains - Star Of The County Down

Yes, those are some big names in Irish music, MofkA ! I notice that two are modern rock bands with their own songs, and two bands play more traditional folk songs. I prefer the more traditional artists myself.

I never know where to find it, I hear it used on TV or in movies all the time, but never seem to be able to find it. Whenever I come across Irish music or celtic music it all tends to be 'Ahhh shiver me lady, she shine quite shady, Carryin me pints on me way, La de da de da etc'

Can anyone help? Cheers
