I don't think you're reading too much into it, tho Dylan's relationship with serendipity is such that he may not have thought about it, it just happened

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Have you read "Dylan's Vision of Sin" by Christopher Ricks?

Ricks is kind of known for writing about the works of poets like T.S. Eliot, and he's really great at pulling back the layers and getting down to some pretty novel ideas. I think his take on Dylan's work is the freshest in years, pherhaps even one of the freshest yet, and he draws the connections between Dylan's work and the work of others, touching on that serendipity within his work. You should really check him out.
