Johnny Cash is one of the few artists where its more fact than myth. People always say 'before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything'. Cash did everything apart from die young, and probably had one of the most intersting lives in music.
I prefer his later work, the 'American' albums, they were deep and from the heart.
My fave songs are:
Help me
I see a darkness
Walk the line
A boy named sue

I think Johnny Cash's music is good for just about every mood. Its like he's not even trying to make music, but rather just telling a story to the tune of music.

i bought a country compelation album the other day mostly for the johnny cash only to realise i'd misread and all the songs were actually performed by the wood brothers

I've been a Cash fan since I was about 6 yrs old. Ever since my grandpa took me to one of his concerts about 18 years ago, his voice has just mesmorize me. Ever since then, I've been to every concert he's put on within about 8 hours of my town and own pretty much every album (both vinyl and cd) that I could get my hands on. I'd have to say that my Top 5 songs he sings are:

1. Spiritual. This song makes you really feel his pain, especially the last half. He sang it when he was in his last decade of life and getting hospitalized more often.
2. Crazy Old Soldier
3. Hurt
4. Sunday Morning Coming Down Makes you feel like you have a hangover even if you don't
5. It Takes One to Know Me

I really like Johnny Cash but a large part of the reason for that is because of Luther Perkins. The man's guitar playing is some of the best Ive ever heard. Very melodic and tuneful. One of th reasons Im unimpressed with most rock players is that its just hitting 8ths or in the case of metal players 16ths. Luther didnt just hit 8ths, he let the notes in his solos last different lengths and he knew when to leave space. He had a real dynamic approach thats influenced me no end.

A Boy Named Sue wasn't written by Johnny Cash, It was a Shel Silverstein song. Shel wrote some great songs
