Bump.
I've loved Johnny Cash for a while but I've never got an album of his. Mainly cos I dunno what to get, a lot of artists have THAT album, Cash doesn't appear to have that.. So, I'm just about to get myself a Cash compilation album but I'm not sure which one's the best to get. Anyone got any insight? Or does he have any must have albums that I'm unaware of? Thanks for any help anyone can give. |

Yeah but don't count out the American stuff, which is different but nothing short of great. I think when these older guys in the twilight of their lives/careers cover songs, its solidifying the new American Songbook beyond the Tin Pan Alley days.

Johnny Cash is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I have been listening to him my entire life [With my parents], but mostly on my own after his death until now. I know by saying this I sound like one of those bandwagon listeners and to some degree its possible I am. However, I was only about nine or ten when Cash passed away, and like most people at that age I wasn't exactly a music guru (and seven/eight years later I'm still not! lol) so I didn't really see just how much I liked him until I started hearing more, and more of him and until finally I owned a 'Greatest Hits Album' that got a lot of play and sometimes still gets some for nostalgia.
Anyway, I find that I quite enjoy early Cash, I 'bottom out' on some of his 'middle career', and his latest stuff I really liked. So I certainly think he might have hit a bit of slump at some point in his career he still recorded enough great stuff to cover up for it. I thought the new album was good, I didn't go back to read what others he thought of it. My first listen through it gave me chills.

I have a decent collection of Johnny on my iTunes. Some favorites:
Ring Of Fire (of course) Hurt Personal Jesus Don't Take Your Guns To Town Rusty Cage God's Gonna Cut You Down One Piece At A Time The One On The Right Is On The Left I've Been Everywhere I Walk The Line I See A Darkness Mean Eyed Cat (Ghost Riders) In The Sky Yes, I'm also aware those are not all original Cash songs. :P I have a lot more and that might seem like a typical list of someone who's only heard hits, but I am a sucker for his later, emotional music. |
