The earliest example of a flute was discovered in the Hohle Fels cave near Ulm, Germany. The five-finger flute, made from the bone of a griffon vulture, is thought to be at least 35,000 years old.

the Met museum in nyc has an absolutely mind-blowing exhibit on ancient instruments. There are ancient stringed instruments that look like simple violins that came out of Africa, for example. It's really beautiful to see that humans all came to the same conclusions based on their exploration of physics and their instinctual desire to communicate through sound.
