Henze - Il Raddappiato Vitalino
I think this may be one of the best pieces of music I've heard of any genre. It's formed of chiasmatic 'rhyming couplets' between the Respighi arrangement of the Vitali chaconne and Henze's answers. At one point Henze's answer is simply a lengthy chromatic scale. It is impossible that the Vitali theme is preserved in there, but it is. Impossible, but true.
It was first performed for Austrian Radio with Gidon Kremer as soloist in 1977 one of his best performances and reprised by Peter Sheppard Skærved in a new release by Naxos. |
