Classical music with drums
Obviously most orchestral music utilizes drums to some extent, but I'm talking about music with prominent drums, something you could call a beat or at least strong rhythmic elements.
There is a lot of experimental music for drums only, for example by Xenakis or Cage, Harry Partch and Moondog also come to mind, as well as some Zappa. What else is there? And is there older, more traditional classical music with prominent drums? |
I'd like to hear this as well. Lack of percussion was always something that kept me away from exploring classical music.

...and let's not forget the great Scott Johnson.

Check this out:
7 percussion parts, enough for you? |

As a whole it wasn't really my cup of tea, but some parts were pretty cool. |
Juan Bautista Cabanilles (1644-1712): Imperial Battle.
Also, there are a lot of military marches from all over the world, :) e.g.: Etc... |
Also, Cage's percussion pieces are some of my all around favourite music, classical or otherwise. |
Just came to me.
Excuse me being a bit of a smartass with this one, it's not necessarily genuine classical music, but this track is a great example of classical music sampling for experimental music. The piece is obviously heavily built upon samples, if not entirely, but it's still extremely well done and actually quite moving. Drums and percussion kick in at 3:30. Please use good headphones. |

If we're going that way, let's also not forget Alarm Will Sound's AFX album. |
^Oh damn I had forgotten about them. I love a/rhythmia.
