I do agree with you that in recent years Indie music has been getting more popular to the point that yes it has broken into the charts. Especially Indie-pop and Indie Electro type music.

Yeah, I love classical music but classical music fans are the main ones that are looking out for it along with band students learning music theory etc.

In my humble opinion classical music will always be relevant in human society, since is the first form of complex and very beautiful form of music ever created.
Maybe a trivial confirmation of the relevance, can be the fact that lots of television/radio advertising still use some classical pieces because they are simply known by everyone. Even people that don't like classical music know some classical melody.

yeah yeah yeah but answer this question...

In comparison with today's music (pop, rock, metal, electronica, etc). Does classical music still have a place amongst today's audience, or has it been relegated to more specific listeners (i.e. music students, people learning instruments, elderly people)?

WHY or WHY NOT?

This thread needs to be locked so DJ and Frown can give up on this argument.

No, they just talked about the question posed in the thread title but not in the OP which are two different questions.

I listen to some classical music, I'm today's audience. I got some Beethoven and Mozart on my Ipod. What now!

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.

Today's audience refers to mainstream radio.

I listen to classical music too.

I have Mozart, Beethoven and Romanovsky on my cell phone too.

In that case, jazz, shoegaze, powerviolence, flamenco, psychedelic rock, and any other number of genres is irrelevant, since it's not played on mainstream radio.
