Sergio Leone was the director of many of these not the composer. For that you want Ennio Morricone who is a brilliant composer but certainly not underated.

Yeah that's the guy.
I remember now as I have the album of the theme music.

Would he be put amoung the greats though?
Or is that just a matter of time.

He mastered polyphonic harmony using mostly imiatation. It's really good music if you like Choral stuff. His music is hard to find also, but it's worth it if you do. So who do you guys think is the most underrated?

Have to agree, Josquin was considered the greatest composer of his day by his contemporaries. The motet De profundis clamavi is definitely worth a listen.

Modest Petrovitch Mussorgsky.

Too often remembered as "That fat Russian dude who wrote piano stuff for people..."

I'd have to say Alexander Scriabin.. his pieces are genius, especially Etude Op.8 No.12 ..

I 100% agree, but I'm more into the Prelude Op. 74 No. 2...Yeah I know it's more popular, but it really shows how deranged his mind worked and how it transposed into his music.

LOL, the topic is about "underrated" composer and you're talking about Bach Chopin and Beethoven... I think the human respiratory system is underrated lmao

and I'll agree with X-One, Scriabin would be my choice too, less accessible but incredible if you bother listening carefully. etude op 8 no 12 is one of my favorite (Evgeny Kissin has the best recording of it on youtube)

Honestly? I would say all composers that are underrated are the ones that people that do not play or know much about classical music do not know.
If you mention Beethoven, Mozart, or Bach, they'll know.
But if you mention Debussy, Schumann, or Prokofiev, they'll have no idea..
My theory may be incorrect, but that's what I think.
