John Chowning developed FM synthesis while working for Stanford University. So this recording (he only made a few) is him using FM synthesis, years before FM became ubiquitous with the Yamaha DX7. FM might seem like a thing of the past, but it's still used today. Skrillex uses Native Instruments FM8, a soft ware version, to achieve his atomic bass wobbles.

The Welsh band 'The Rusty Nutz' can't get much more obscure and experimental than those guys. They once used the walls in the pub they were playing as drums. By smacking it with their hands and micing up the sound. Check out the track She is Everything
