The poll says we're listening to Human Being - Live at the Zodiak - Berlin 1968 this week.

It's by an early Krautrock band called Human Being. It's pretty much a noise rock/experimental/krautrock/free improvisation album. It has only one track that lasts 56 minutes and 34 seconds. Just by listening to ten minutes of it I can tell you this seems like a great and interesting album to check out.

These guys do a better job at summing it up: Music Review: Human Being - Live at the Zodiak

Thanks to Noise, I was able to obtain a download. :D

If anyone needs a link I can PM it to you.

OccultHawk 04-21-2011 06:50 AM

I'm disappointed about how this thing is already almost dead.:(

dankrsta 04-21-2011 07:05 AM

Yeah, it's been going slowly lately. As for me personally, I'll add my comments, review on the Konstantin Raudive album soon. The spring holiday is coming for me, so I'll have more time to really dive into albums. But really, we listened and commented on some 12 albums so far, so it's not that bad.

Cool. I appreciate you doing all this and getting it going. Even if it ebbs and flows or even ebbs and ebbs and ebbs and flows a little let's stick it out and and keep it up.

Hmmm...every time OccultHawk suggests an album it gets elected immediately. :/ There must be some voodoo at work here, or some other occult magick :)
So Charles Ives it is for this week's listening

Three for three!

I nearly voted for Art Zoyd today but I still had to hear Scissor Shock. :D

TockTockTock 04-27-2011 03:44 PM

I need a link to the Charles Ives album.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 04-27-2011 03:46 PM

Send it to me, I'm psyched as hell for this one (I voted 'Berlin' then slapped myself in the face forgetting this was nominated).

starrynight 04-28-2011 01:15 AM

I thought Meredith Monk deserved to get a vote, it is quite classical as well in a way and certainly different as well. But I'm sure there will be some good music in the Charles Ives compilation.

TockTockTock 04-28-2011 05:29 AM

I hope it's a good album. Now... all we need is a link to download it....

dankrsta 04-29-2011 05:36 AM

OK, so I got Charles Ives from soulseek, all 41 tracks except for one, the 4th, which is some 45 sec. long. So, do you all want me to up it now, or to wait for that one track which for some reason I can't download?

I'll wait a bit maybe look myself. If I find it, I'll say something.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 04-29-2011 11:25 AM

If Monday comes around, and you can't find it, I'll take it without track 4. I can't find it at all, for some reason.

dankrsta 04-30-2011 05:36 AM

The poll is open!

I voted for Mike Gordon, cause that suggestion is in the poll too long, one of the very first nominations.

dankrsta 05-02-2011 01:22 PM

Okay, the poll is completely tied. I will suggest that this week we listen to the album that's been in the poll the longest, and that's Mike Gordon - Inside In.
What do you say? Does anyone object?

Uhg. Some dude from Phish? OK, whatever... But just for the record, Phish is an absolutely deplorable band. I mean God awful.

Matter of opinion. I know many people who find them to be a great band.

On another note, I would rather not go with that album. If you really want to review it because of the fact it's been in the polls for so long then go ahead, but I'm just giving my take on it.

I disagree. Rather than going through continual tie breaking polls, and we're going to get to it anyway.

dankrsta 05-02-2011 04:25 PM

So what's it gonna be? I think it's fair when there's a tie, to go with the album that's in the poll the longest, regardless of our personal preference.

As for Phish, I haven't really listened to them, so I have no idea if this Mike Gordon album is similar to them or not. But, why don't we check it out and then judge?

OccultHawk 05-02-2011 06:15 PM

Yeah, of course.

Fine with me. I listened to the samples on Amazon already to get a taste. I'll give it a fair shake before I hang it.

dankrsta 05-02-2011 06:48 PM

OK then, this week we're listening to Mike Gordon - Inside In.

This is an especially interesting album, and I would definitely love to recommend it. This album acts as sort of a "soundtrack" to Gordon's equally avant-garde film, "Outside Out". The artists who contribute to this album are too extensive and varied to list, so I recommend checking 'em out on the Wikipedia page here. There's a taste of a little bit of everything on here; bluegrass, folk, funk, pure psychedelia...it's just an overwhelmingly interesting album. Definitely worth a listen...and then a repeat listen.

Janszoon 05-07-2011 06:31 AM

I know I haven't participated in this club for a while but I have something I'd like to nominate...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Pierre Schaeffer—L'oeuvre Musicale
For those unfamiliar with this guy, here's a brief description from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Amongst the vast range of works and projects he undertook, Schaeffer is most widely and currently recognized for his accomplishments in electronic and experimental music, at the core of which stands his role as the chief developer of a unique and early form of avant-garde music known as musique concrète. The genre emerged out of Europe from the utilization of new music technology developed in the post-Nazi Germany era, following the advance of electroacoustic and acousmatic music.

...

Today, Schaeffer is considered one of the most influential experimental, electroacoustic and subsequently electronic musicians, having been the first composer to utilize a number of contemporary recording and sampling techniques that are now used worldwide by nearly all record production companies. His collaborative endeavors are considered milestones in the histories of electronic and experimental music.
The album I've nominated here is actually a four disc box set and that's probably too much to tackle. So I'm suggesting we just focus on the first disc which, I believe, compiles some of his earliest work.

dankrsta 05-08-2011 12:04 PM

^^added to the poll

Okay, sorry for delaying the poll update. I was waiting to see if people wanted another week for Charles Ives, but nobody said anything...And so, you can start voting now

TockTockTock 05-08-2011 01:41 PM

Oh, I apologize for not saying something earlier. Ives Plays Ives is just a lengthy/dense album to tackle, and I would rather not rush into it.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 05-10-2011 11:35 AM

So there's a tie again. Do you want to vote again between these two options or to go with the older suggestion?

Okay, let's vote again

So, after all this modern classical/avant-garde stuff, I thought of recommending something on the 'popular' side of things.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K8bS9T70uV...hroud%2Bof.jpg

Minimal Man - The Shroud Of (1981)

Visual and performance artist at core, Patrick Miller aka Minimal Man, is one of the more interesting musicians of the very exciting late 70s post-punk/avant-garde/electronic San Francisco scene, art punk or industrial punk if you prefer it. This is his first album which I very much recommend for its relentless haunting power.

EDIT: The new poll is open!

Janszoon 05-14-2011 07:08 AM

Let me know if anyone needs a link for L'oeuvre Musicale.

dankrsta 05-14-2011 07:13 AM

^Me :)

TockTockTock 05-15-2011 09:59 AM

Yea, I voted for the Minimal Man album for obvious reasons. I've only heard a few songs by him, but from the little I have heard I have to say I am impressed.

By the way, have you listened to the the album, The Bridge (1979), by Thomas Leer and Robert Rental?

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 05-15-2011 11:06 AM

Can I implore us to vote some of the older ones? We keep voting the ones suggested the week of. Need to keep some life, freshness, and variety on this list. If we keep voting this way, we're going to end up having 4 or 5 that are constantly on the list.

OccultHawk 05-15-2011 01:21 PM

I've been voting Crispin for a few weeks straight.
