Going by the description I'm very curious to hear it. And the song titles are hilarious, especially 'Involuntary Orgasms During The Cleaning Of Automobiles'. Haha, I know some people who love their cars that much.

Since the voting ended in a tie, I made another poll with three options that previously had 2 votes each: Harry Partch, Einsturzende Neubaten and Crispin Glover.

Please vote again for one of these three.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 02-27-2011 12:23 PM

Seeing as how we're down to three I'd like to nominate:

Learn To Talk/Country of Blinds(1990) is technically two albums, but most places you can find/download it offer it as one. If you ask me, it first PERFECTLY as a double album. There's never been a time I've not listened to it as one. Now, in a lot of ways this isn't quite as 'avant-garde' or experimental as many of the albums presented. I mean, it uses mostly guitar, cello, and other conventional instrumentation. But, compositionally, it's by far one of the most interesting things I've ever heard.

Maybe I'm just not knowing of the source, but Skeleton Crew - to me- sounds nothing like anything else on the planet. It's kind of folky but not folk, it's avant-garde but definitely not noisey. There's worlds of Celtic influence, very relatable lyrics of social/politica satire, improv jam sections, tons of sampling, strange vocal patterns.

By far, probably Fred Frith's greatest band/work imo.

TockTockTock 02-27-2011 12:26 PM

I think you should just omit The Velvet Underground and Nico in the next poll. Everyone has already heard it, and it's just taking up space...

By the way, great recommendation, Skaligojurah. I see that you're still on that avant-prog musical tangent.

Well, we're not down to three technically. Other albums also had some votes, it's just that these three had the most. Anyway, I've been meaning to check out Skeleton Crew, so good suggestion Skaligojurah

Yeah I agree...I shall take it down.

dankrsta 02-28-2011 12:34 PM

No way! Another tie...I'll leave it till tomorrow in hope somebody breaks it.

clutnuckle 02-28-2011 01:40 PM

I voted Crispin Hellion Glover; you can change my vote to Partch and consider it untied if you'd like.

Nope. That just wouldn't be fair.

I have the democratic right to vote; I should simultaneously possess the democratic right to change my vote in order for the vote to actually mean something.

PARTCH FOR '11

Yes, that's a good idea.

Why? I could make another poll with two options: Partch and Neubauten and seeing how the last two times there were 7 votes total, it would be 4:3 for Partch with clutnuckle's vote. This is just a shortcut.

OccultHawk 02-28-2011 03:08 PM

I'm just joking.

dankrsta 02-28-2011 03:35 PM

^Oh...I can't really tell. Were you joking when you said Partch was a moronic goofball? That's one of the reasons I'm glad we're gonna listen to him :D. I'm curious to read your thoughts. Should be entertaining.

So, clutnuckle changed his vote and it's 4:3 for Harry Partch - Delusion of the Fury. That's on our plate this week.

Harry Partch - Delusion of Fury

This is a bit of a standard, but I'll suggest it anyway. It really showcases his unique, originally crafted instruments and the vagrancy theme throughout is actually very thought provoking.

I voted for Kollaps, but I like Partch. Should be fun to talk about.

No, but I have a tendency to overstate things. I am already familiar with this record though.

If it helps, watch the documentary on Youtube about him. It'll open up your mind to what he tried to accomplish with his works.

I guess he said they did because that was the one I ended up buying. Still mixed in with hundreds of other cassettes. I really don't know why I didn't get it all instead of almost none. I still have things that need to be rectified and that's one of them. Downloading a bunch of Branca.

I just wanted to correct this. The cassette I bought was Symphony No.1 (Tonal Plexus) and the guy I talked on the phone with was from ROIR. Who knows? Maybe it was Neil Cooper.

Vote for the next album!

My vote goes to Gum. It sounds very interesting.

This week we're listening to Gum - Vinyl. Yey!!

please note the track listing

Gum - Vinyl (Vinyl, LP) at Discogs

That was the original release but in all likelyhood people will end up downloading the full Anthology should this win but my suggestion is for the tracks on the original release only

Gum : Vinyl Anthology
"Gum's music consisted entirely of locked grooves, vinyl surface noise derived from the duo's destruction of thrift store acquisitions. You could say that Gum were early "turntablists" before there was a scene or a school for such a thing, before the instrumentalists' concern for technique spoiled it, before the community of practice turned it into "an artform". They presaged serious turntablists and noisicians like Philip Jeck, Otomo Yoshihde, Martin Tretault, Merzbow, Janek Schaefer. At their best, Gum rendered absolute minimal abstractions into foreground role, musically, playing off the residual, vestigial remains of sounds that threaten contextualization but routinely fail to deliver. Exquisite sound poems like "Smooth Torture in Exile" hold all of the manufactured memory that old vinyl carries, mangled just enough so the sounds don't divulge their sources and muddy the waters with 'reference'. The sounds come to represent only themselves and, as this collection demonstrates, these stand up to time. The results of decomposition, trusted even if its appropriateness is quite unclear."

Same

TockTockTock 03-07-2011 12:53 PM

Might as well suggest this album:

Psychic Existentialist (2010) by Scissor Shock

http://s.dsimg.com/image/R-150-2449033-1284650063.jpeg

I can't say too much about this strange album except it is extremely complicated and unpredictable. Elements of jazz, psychedelia, Shoegaze, glitch, noise, musique concrete, Spanish guitar, ambient, and folk quickly appear in and out of the tracks within this album. Anyways, I won't pretend to know too much about this album because the whole reason I am posting it is because I want to understand more about it. That's it...

dankrsta 03-07-2011 12:57 PM

^Wow, with that much eclecticism that's either awful or awesome.

Exactly why I posted it. I wanted to see what you guys thought of it (that is if it gets elected).

OccultHawk 03-07-2011 04:54 PM

Just so everyone knows, I have no link to the Gum record. I have the original Vinyl pressing limited edition of 500 that I bought when it came out. There is a CD version out there called Anthology that includes this entire record though.

dankrsta 03-07-2011 05:04 PM

Yeah, I already sent them the Anthology. It wasn't hard to find.

I hope everyone focuses on the music from the first album like I suggested.

dankrsta 03-08-2011 04:06 AM

^Yes, the first 10 songs of the Anthology are the original Vinyl album. That's what we'll be discussing. I think that's clear from your original post, but no harm in repeating it.

OccultHawk 03-08-2011 05:35 AM

Since my suggestion won I would like to toss another out there for the next list:

Voices of the Dead
by Konstantin Raudive

Voices of the Dead | CD WOW! Deutschland

Quote:

Voices of the dead - a fascinating project taken out of a mysterious past and relocated in the present - an important documentation and reinterpretation of early recordings, electronic experiments and oral history. featuring DJ Spooky, Scanner, Random Inc, Lee ranaldo, Ensemble, David Toop, CM Von hausswolff, Calla. for many, the first traces of the Raudive Tapes were in William Burroughs fictions and articles. The fact is, these mysterious magnetic tapes, which capture the voices of the dead, and were recorded by the baltic scientist Konstantin Raudive, are not a fiction but a reality (we are not here to judge their scientific objectivity ). featuring archives + exclusive pieces of music based on the Raudive material. Excellent packaging and artwork. Great bio and liner notes in English.

And, so the album for this week's listening is Skeleton Crew - Learn To Talk/Country of Blinds

Early industrial is quite rightly attributed to bands like Throbbing Gristle amongst others but this album really gives definition to the term industrial and by it's very nature is highly experimental.

Electric drills, power tools and all manner of electric tomfoolery are present on their debut yet it is relatively well defined and cohesive and although it lacks finesse at times, it certainly makes up for it in invention.

Even if you end up not liking it, one cannot deny the originality and verve of it.

The discussion thread for Skeleton Crew is opened:
