in all honesty i think if i listened to Sunn while under the influence of anything but alcohol i would want to kill myself....but different strokes for different folks....i just think that this type of stuff is a very acquired taste....its loud and often kind of boring.....if they are something you really want to get into maybe try some of O'Malley's less intense bands like Burning Witch, Thorr's Hammer, and Khanate...all of which are really good but a bit more on the "rock" side of things....i defiantly suggest Thorr's Hammer....they are amazing

i saw Sunn live a couple years agao....and it was absolutely amazing....Earth and pelican opened the show and then they filled the club with fog....and i mean FILLED the club you could not see your hand in front of your face....anbd then we were simply attacked with a wall of sound...i mean the audience literally move back from the vibrations....i unfortunately had not got my ear plugs in....and by then it was just too late....i took weeks to fully get my hearing back....very stupid....anyways it was probably one of the most "satanic" things i have ever seen live....absolutely crazy and fun to watch

edit...thought i would post an example of Thorr's Hammer
Spoiler for Thorr's Hammer - Norge:

her voice is ****ing incredible...to go from one extreme to another like that

I'm pretty experienced with the experimental and avant-garde (ex.Derek Baily, Throbbing Gristle, Sun City Girls, Gastr Del Sol) so what's the deal? Why am I not enjoying this?

Like people have said it's an acquired taste. You don't have to enjoy it high even though it helps, really along with any type of music. The music itself is great to have in the background. It's kind of like a darker side of ambience which is very loud. It just sounds good you either love it or hate it. Also keep in mind that "Maximum volume yields maximum results."

I've heard some crazy things about Sunn O))) concerts. I heard about this guy who had a rattling noise in his ears for a week after seeing them live.

Only if they could come to halifax...

They weren't that loud when I saw them, just as loud as any other band. They did use a ton of fog though, like bob said. I don't think I've ever seen a band use so much fog before, except maybe Sisters of Mercy.
