let's make an album

just pick your favorite chord and drone/smash the hell out of it. and record it. on whatever instrument. maybe do it with a metronome. then put a link to it here and we can start to compile an album where each song is dedicated to a chord. anyone down? this could be a great collaborative effort, even if you have a really crappy microphone it can all be remixed and layered and what not.

Piss Me Off 03-31-2009 02:17 PM

If i had some recording stuff i would be so up for this :(

333 03-31-2009 02:19 PM

^ I know. What a beautiful idea. I hope you will get better replies soon, cardboard. Until then, kudos.

cardboard adolescent 03-31-2009 05:52 PM

if anyone needs some help getting started i just made this drum loop you can play around with: Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

Inuzuka Skysword 03-31-2009 06:01 PM

I might do this. I am a really crappy electric guitar that can really only make noise. If anything comes at all, I may have this by Saturday. Do you want just droned chords, or do you want us just an overall drone-y track?

Rage Against the Machine 03-31-2009 06:54 PM

I'm sure I'll get bored over spring break next month, so I might do this. Would sludgy Jesu type stuff be alright?

cardboard adolescent 03-31-2009 06:54 PM

any sort of structure is fine, as long as you limit yourself to playing the notes of whatever one chord you choose.

Do you want us to put the chord we picked here?

If so, I don't know the exact name of the chord, but I know it is some sort of Em. It is basically all open strings with fingers on A string 2nd fret and D string 4th fret.

Alfred 03-31-2009 07:16 PM

I would really love to do this but:

Each person makes their own song?

If so, how many instruments can we use?

Surell 03-31-2009 07:24 PM

Can I rap over these tunes?

are you sure that's not d string 5th fret? otherwise that's pretty discordant, but if that's what you're going with that's fine.

you can either make your own song and say here which chord you're doing, or add part(s) to something someone else has posted. if you're starting your own, you can record as many parts as you want, it's up to you.

Double X 03-31-2009 08:21 PM

i might play a repeating one-note bassline into my microphone.

We'll see.

Alfred 03-31-2009 08:25 PM

Okay, sounds awesome. I'll try my hand at one of these songs.

Actually I think he's speaking of an Em(add9) which is quite a nice chord. In fact that's one of the main chords used in Breathe (Pink Floyd). Minor 9 chords are really great.

I'm definitely taking part in this. I'm not quite sure what chord I'm going to use, but I've never attempted to make a whole track with one chord. It should be a lot of fun. I'll come up with a sketch over the next week or so.

I think that I could. But the real question is may I?

Alfred 03-31-2009 08:46 PM

I wanna do a shoegaze song so badly.

you're right, that is a great chord

Blue 03-31-2009 09:15 PM

So are you looking for us to make the whole track on our own, or is this supposed to be a collaboration on each track?

cardboard adolescent 03-31-2009 09:21 PM

i think it'd be more interesting as a collaboration, but that doesn't mean you can't record multiple parts

Sounds great, I'm already underway.

Alfred 04-01-2009 02:23 PM

i think it'd be cool if we all recorded our own song, and then submitted an individual track for a collaborative song

anyways, I'd like to do a song using D chords (whether it be the standard D, bar/power chord d, or open drop d)

Blue 04-01-2009 03:35 PM

Actually I'm curious, are we limited to one type of chord? For example, if I chose to do a Cadd9, could I use other notes, like the major seventh and what not as long as they fit in the context of C, or could I only use the notes in the Cadd9?

Alfred 04-01-2009 04:20 PM

Well, I'm off to create an experimental masterpiece!

Kamikazi Kat 04-01-2009 11:36 PM

I doubt I could put together my own song, but I'll gladly at least try to contribute something to a song somebody else makes. If only I had some way to record my drumset and not make it sound like crap. I can play the drums well, but the quality of my set isn't so great.

I have a guitar, a bass, and a keyboard that I can sort of play. I can make weird sounds with my voice such as pig squeals, screeches and a variety of other crap. The problem is, the only stuff is a laptop built in mic and audacity. But yeah, I'll hopelessly try. I do have a few mics though, I just have to get something that I could use to plug them into my computer.

cardboard adolescent 04-03-2009 02:56 PM

B-e-g

here's the first official entry, this has already got a lot going on but could really use some guitar or horn drone on top. the chord is b-e-g, which i guess is a c major seventh without the c being played, or something. here:
(the file is beg 3.mp3)
Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire
it's 85 bpm, if you needed to know for some reason

i would say if you do use them, use them only as though they were accidentals so that nobody has to worry about trying to detect a chord progression

Alfred 04-03-2009 04:18 PM

I recorded a couple brief parts of songs with different D chords/notes. One was a conventional beat, and one was a really fast/intense one. I used electric guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. I'll combine the two tracks somehow sometime and upload them.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-04-2009 11:19 AM

I think I am gonna' have my song in by tomorrow. I have a droning track, but I feel like going somewhere else with it, and I don't have the time to finish it today.

Alfred 04-04-2009 11:26 AM

Mine sounds somewhat conventional, it's not just droning or thrashing about... is that a problem?

cardboard adolescent 04-04-2009 11:38 AM

not at all

Hopefully the songs will have good rhythm, it'll be hard without something steady. But that will just take away a white boy rapping, no loss.

Farfisa 04-04-2009 07:46 PM

If only I had a mic right now. Could we maybe play like let's say a D chord but in different octaves? or no?

cardboard adolescent 04-04-2009 07:55 PM

yes, that is fine

Farfisa 04-04-2009 08:05 PM

I'll be sure to get my hands on a mic with in this week hopefully...

Surell 04-04-2009 11:40 PM

Me too if I don't already have one.

Farfisa 04-05-2009 02:22 PM

Eeek... I have so many wonderful Ideas for this. Gonna add loads of built up guitar feedback at the end of five minutes of strumming a D chord. Maybe throw in an acoustic guitar in the mix, shit's gonna get fucked up.

Alfred 04-05-2009 02:30 PM

^Since I'm doing the D-chord as well, maybe we can work something out.

I might record another song, but make it really thick and droney and scream over top of it.

Farfisa 04-05-2009 02:34 PM

I was planing to finger pick around the d chord on my acoustic while I play my electric (all strings tuned to d) with tons of echo/delay and reverb and then send it into a never ending loop while shoving my guitar into my amp. Oh god, I'm just getting goose bumbs from thinking about it but, that's only if I get a mic.

Alfred 04-05-2009 02:41 PM

A song could always be progressive. We could have little intermissions so to speak between the parts of the song.

I have a few ideas, maybe some wind chimes and a Billy Mays sound clip while the music fades in and out.
