Be honest, guys, they are copying MBV far more than they are copying Joy Division, The Church, JAMC (although effects levels are similar), Sisters of Mercy, or REM.
Although I do suffer from nostalgia, I do want to give new bands a chance but my opinion stands on their (1st) album. I like what they are doing and I think they have a lot of potential but I listened to it a few times and my impression got more solid each time. They need to find their sound.

Loose Lips - ask me about any new shoegaze band and I will give you a more precise answer about who they are copying if you want. For APTBS it is MBV.

I'm being completely honest when I say I hear more of any of those bands in there than MBV. Well maybe with the possible exception of Joy Division.

His style of singing is reminiscent of Ian Curtis'... besides that they really have nothing in common. The wall of fuzz and the descructiveness of APTBS is very much like early JAMC though.

His style of singing is way more like Steve Kilbey from the Church IMO.

From what I've heard I guess you could have a valid point there...

Fair enough. I'm thinking about how the songs' melodies are mainly made by layers of effected sounds (like MBV) and not by the standard 3-chord rock structure that the other bands use more openly. I really do like the idea of APTBS - that may be why I was disappointed by their album. My main complaint is that I thought it replaced substance with a whole lot of effects and clever sounds. It just reminds me of a lackluster MBV. But, like I said, I like the idea behind what they're doing and I hope to enjoy their next album more - I'll give it an open minded listen.
Btw -and I don't mean to piss off loose_lips_sink_ships again- The vocals remind me a lot of early Mark Gardener.
