no wave
who can recommend/send me some obscure no wave? i could do with some no wave revival, but i'm thinking early 80's nyc.
there's the gang of four included on the controversial no new york brian eno comp: mars dna (arto lindsay is amazing) james chance & the contortions (buy is amazing, i need james white & the blacks) teenage jesus & the jerks (lydia lunch is crazy) then off to the side there's glenn branca's band theoretical girls, who are pretty good as well. glenn branca and rhys chatham go on to do giant orchestral guitar pieces which can't really be termed no wave, i think chatham likes post-minimalism. in any case, that's about all i know. in terms of no wave revival, i really like black eyes and old time relijun. you? |
I'm guessing you know about Swans? I think that's about as familiar with No Wave as i am.

The Pop Group are on of the best bands i've ever heard, IMO. get the album Y not necessarily no wave but balls to the walls goodness is a band called Bastard Kestrel. . the album oh splendid mushroom is great! Essential Logic are unbelievable!! its got lisa logic from x-ray spex in it but are about a thousand times better in my opinion. not no wave but "This Heat" are really ****ing good. You may know them. if not they are definitely worth a good listen. get the album "Deceit" to start and go from there. hope that does something for you. |
yeah pop group, essential logic and this heat are all great. i'll have to look into bastard kestrel.
|

|
the only No Wave bands i know are all the ones you mentioned... read an article about Smell and the LA revival thing time ago... can anybody vouch for that?

|

|

Lydia Lunch was mental. Sex personified. ****ing intelligent too, she was one of those people that really got it... if only I could find that interview on youtube... I've not managed to hear her collab with that bloke from the Birthday Party yet either... |
F*ck! wish i could go to that!
does anyone know where i can find some Mars . .. i can't find anything! |

I've only listened to one band in that genre and it's No Age. I guess I should look up Swans and what not as I do like no wave.

Hey cardboard adolescent, do you need James White & The Blacks - Off White still?
|
I'd like it as well.
|
This Heat is awesome. I only like one song on a Pop Group's album.
The Swans are nice as well. |
If you guys are looking for a really obscure no wave band then you should check out Theoretical Girls... Glenn Branca's short lived band. Theoretical Girls - s/t « Sector 2814
|
I still need to get some DNA, Swans and Theoretical Girls. I have some Teenage Jesus, Mars, James Chance, Lounge Lizards and Glenn Branca though.
|
Haven't heard much no wave. I have got James Chance's 'Buy' though (which is great stuff, even if I haven't really listened to it that much). Been meaning to get into DNA, Teenage Jesus and Lounge Lizards for a fair while now

I have most of Swans discography, Buy and the No New York compilation. Seriously good stuff. No New York is perhaps my favourite comp ever
|
I like a few artists, but it gets really old and the revival scene is bad.
|
oooh i got a good band for you, they are called foot village, they are an all percussion band , all of their songs are countries ex. "Where ever the **** arnold schwarzenegger is from" or "japan" or "mexico", the music is quite compelling and is worth a listen.

I've just watched a documentary about the No Wave, just now. They talked mostly about:
Christoph Dreher (of Die Haut), Jim Jarmusch, Nick Cave (& The Bad Seeds) and Lydia Lunch, while showing bits of lots of other bands that I forgot, [I just remember James White & The Blacks]. If you want to check it, it's called No Wave - Underground '80: Berlin - New York (2009) by Christoph Dreher. |
Would Nick Cave really be considered No Wave?
|
not really. your manifesto is interesting, but i disagree with the exclusion of popular music forms. remodernism seems to me like it should be about embracing everything so long as it strives for authenticity.
|
I'm glad you found the Manifesto interesting. The Manifesto is an experiment, not something that we're totally bound to 100% of the time. For example, I agree very much with Remodernism, but reject it's rejection of post-modernism. That's why I included the last clause of the Manifesto, because in the end, a Manifesto becomes a totalitarian tool that dictates art, which it shouldn't do.
On a side note, I think I could see certain early Nick Cave recordings like "Saint Huck" fitting the No Wave aesthetic |
I think the Birthday Party are more classifiable as no wave than any of his solo stuff, but even so I wouldn't really call it no wave. He has worked with (and probably f'ucked) Lydia Lunch though, so there's a definite connection.

You know, Jim Jarmusch is connected to punk and no wave cinema, and he founded the "Sons of Lee Marvin" 'secret society'. Other members include Thurston Moore and Nick Cave.
Bit of a stretch though. Nick Cave and Lydia Lunch together would certainly be classifiable as Cinema of Transgression though, right? |
