The Boredoms

The band to propel "japanoise" into the awareness of American and European audiences have progressed from a Butthole Surfers-esque absurd noise outfit into a sort of psychedelic krautrock noise jam tribe and have made a shitload of great records along the way, as well as many side projects and collaborations with figures like John Zorn...

I love this band because you never know what you are going to get next.

jackhammer 01-27-2008 02:36 PM

...and I would like to hear more....;)

This blog is a pretty good read *cough*

B Music: Boredoms

donnietyo 01-27-2008 04:20 PM

I have Super AE and Vision Creation Newsun, and I love both. I've been meaning to check out their older material.

Ornette 01-27-2008 07:57 PM

Such a great band. Vision Creation Newsun is my favorite by them, but it's really hard to choose.

GravitySlips 01-27-2008 08:58 PM

Vision Creatoin Newsun is my favourite too.

Without doubt, the best band ever. Unparalleled genius. I saw them live with 3 drummers, and it remains the most mindblowing experience of my life (musically).

cardboard adolescent 03-27-2008 08:26 PM

^^ I got to experience that yesterday, it was intensely religious.
Definitely my number two show after Melt Banana.

Really really made me hate Chicago audiences though,
the vast majority of them just looked bored.
I was flailing around like a madman and screaming.

GravitySlips 03-28-2008 09:07 AM

nice, well that's excellent because I'm seeing Melt Banana in June. Looking forward to that immensely.

Michael Gira supported Boredoms here, so getting the chance to see him was good as well.

The Boredoms

10 out of 10

A concert that good, can't even be described right. Too much was going on. eYe came on stage with two balls of light in his hands, and performed a stellar noise/sound performance that, by the time it somehow turned into a melody was already one of the coolest things I'd ever seen live.

Then when Yoshimi and 2 other drummers came out, all perfectly syncopated it was on.

eYe had a whole wall of boxes, contraptions, and a synth (he only used once th whole concert) in front of him. Most of the time he was banging on his WALL OF 7 GUITARS with 2 huge staffs! Or else he yelling into the mic, some stuff in Japanese and controlling the delay of it, periodically.

There was a 5th member who at first just seemed to be a "sound guy" mixing. But then I realized he too was controlling the music somehow, and must have had a sampler of some sort next to his 16bus mixer he rode most of the night.

I really can't say enough about the drumming. This was Tribal Dance music mixed with Dub of the future, that was beyond anything I had ever even imagined.

There is NO YouTube video or live recording that could come close to showing what this band is like live. If you want to know, you just have to see it and be there.

Literally, the best DANCE SHOW I've ever seen AND the best NOISE SHOW, in 1!

Oh, and on the encore ("Seadrum" I believe), when I eYe and Yoshimi both show that are actually INCREDIBLE vocalists, this band had just taken the show to the Nth degree.

eYe ends the show the same way he began it, by waving his hands around with the intensity of a voodoo shaman and the precision of a orchestra conductor. Only this time, rather than controlling some strange orbs of light, he is using his bare hands to conduct the pitch and volume of his fellow band members. Until he reaches so far back that the drone turns to a final high note and the drummers complete their final part of their 3-way 90min solo, and the show is over.

Piss Me Off 03-31-2008 04:16 PM

I've been meaning to hear something from this band for a while now, thank you for reminding me to get an album!

pheurton 04-01-2008 05:05 PM

what should I get first?

jackhammer 04-01-2008 05:11 PM

The only album I have is Pop Tatari. A good a place to start as any I suppose!

cardboard adolescent 04-01-2008 05:17 PM

i dunno, that album is pretty inaccessible.
personally i would go with vision creation newsun first

pheurton 04-01-2008 05:17 PM

I prefer inaccessible though I'll get both.

edit: **** it I'm d/l everything.

edit: newsum is down anyone else got a link?

pheurton 04-02-2008 05:25 AM

Is pop tatari supposed to be laughable in parts?

cardboard adolescent 04-02-2008 09:38 AM

i hope so

Molecules 04-08-2008 01:52 PM

I spent today revelling in my first non-noise exposure to Boredoms with Vision Creation Newsun.

oh. my. nonspecificfigureofworship.

I have to see them live before I die, and then see them again with lots of pills

Chronotub 04-08-2008 04:05 PM

I've been meaning to give this band a listen for a while

someone told me they did a cover of ebenezer goode at a concert, is it on any of their albums or was it just live?

Malicious Wakizashi 04-08-2008 05:25 PM

I'm having some trouble d/l'ing their stuff, could someone pm me a
link to Vision Creation Newsun or any of their other excellent stuff?
I have Pop Tari but I'm not really getting into it.

Piss Me Off 04-12-2008 03:41 PM

Gave Vision Creation Newsun a few listens. To stick that in any genre would just be unjustified, i have no idea what the hell it is but i like it a lot. I think it'll become one of my regular bed-time albums :D

Molecules 04-12-2008 04:44 PM

VCN is just too much. Ambient, but danceable... like dance naked around a fire danceable. Their live shows must be mental

jackhammer 05-28-2008 02:15 PM

Listening to Vision Creation Newsun right now. Suitably impressed. I would love to see these live.

pheurton 05-28-2008 05:07 PM

It's interesting listening to hantarash/UFO or die then seeing how much eye has evolved considering VCN.

Piss Me Off 05-29-2008 02:06 PM

Pop Tatari is finally starting to grow on me! Yay!

cardboard adolescent 05-29-2008 02:15 PM

piss me off, that's the greatest avatar ever.

Ta very much!

Once you 'get' Boredoms you can't help but love what they do. Pop Tatari and VCN have been exhausted, what next?

NSW 06-24-2008 11:56 AM

I'm completely intrigued by this band, even having never heard them. I'm just basing it off of what you guys have said so far. Anyone know where I can have a listen???

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-24-2008 12:44 PM

There's a link in the 4th post down.

And there are plenty of videos on youtube

NSW 06-24-2008 01:45 PM

I tried that link in the 4th post, but it didn't work. Listened to the stuff on Last.fm...but since I'm at work I only had time to listen to one song. I'll definitely check out the rest of the songs and the youtube stuff later tonight. Thanks!

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-24-2008 01:49 PM

Sh*t , I only visited that site last week :(

NSW 06-24-2008 02:12 PM

I tried it a number of times during the day hoping it would work, to no avail. Maybe it's just temporary.

Pornographie Nouveau 02-04-2009 03:08 PM

Anyone want Super Roots 10?

Kamikazi Kat 02-05-2009 10:05 PM

I love The Boredoms, its about time a thread was made on them.

I haven't heard enough by them, just a few songs on youtube so far, but from what I've heard, I'm loving it. I should get a full album by them.

YouTube - Boredoms - Seadrum. Really love this song by them. YouTube - Boredoms - Super Are You. Another good one by the band.

You should get Super Ae, then Super Roots 7 (my favourite SR), then Vision Creation Newsun (my favourite Boredoms album), then Seadrum/House of Sun. Get some more Super Roots (anything after 7) or Rebores or whatever and then if you have the guts, try out some early Boredoms, which is absolutely mad.

Elastic Man 02-20-2009 02:41 PM

Early Boredoms is magnificent.

Right now, I only have Seadum/House of Sun and a few random songs by them that I think I got from limewire when I *shudders* used to use it to get music. But now I discovered that real men use torrents.

I have the guts to try basically anything because I'm amazing, so yeah.

But real men who are well-endowed use megaupload/rapidshare/etc.

Whether you'll like it or not is another thing.
