"Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic band founded in 1995 by members of the Acid Mothers Temple soul-collective. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with 4 core members and frequent vocal guests."

I initially passed them off as a bunch of shitty noise, but after a good few proper listens I began to "get" it. And now I think they're one of the most incredible bands out there. Any other fans?

GravitySlips 01-14-2008 02:41 PM

yeah, awesome band. they're mindblowingly incredible live as well.

I've only heard two albums though, but coincidentally I'm actually downloading 3 albums of theirs at the moment, as well as a live bootleg. They've got a pretty daunting discography, but I'm gonna check out what I can.

jackhammer 01-14-2008 02:43 PM

Fuck yeah. That was awesome. Dug it straight away. I'm off on a hunt!

Seltzer 01-14-2008 05:39 PM

They're a very cool band. I'm a fan of the old 70s psychedelia, so it always makes me happy to see that there are more modern bands which carry the flag. Of course, psychedelia has amalgamated with other genres too (i.e. psytrance), but it's good that psych rock is still alive.

Kevorkian Logic 01-20-2008 01:58 PM

I dig them much.

jackhammer 01-20-2008 02:06 PM

Still gotta find me some albums by them.

GravitySlips 01-26-2008 07:15 PM

I don't know if this is allowed, if not do what you must. Here's a link to a site with LOADS of Acid Mothers albums, which I've been deleriously grabbing over the last day. Some of you are probably familiar with it.

go to page 8, or search "Acid Mothers". **** yes.

they coming and I get to see them!

5-Track 02-08-2008 07:27 PM

Omigod I love this band! Been to see them four or five times now in a few different incarnations, also got to see Kinski with Kawabata on 3rd guitar - MASSIVE. (Anyone dig Kinski btw? guess that'd be a separate thread...) Also AMT played a MAJOR role in opening my mind up to crazier musics, brought me down from classic soul, rock, funk and bits of "world" music to the real essence of where the spirit comes from, thus allowing me to dig such things as Les Rallizes Denudes, Sun City Girls and The Boredoms. Kawabata is one of my favorite guitarists, along with Neil Michael Hagerty and Marc Ribot.

zaanpedro 02-17-2008 09:41 PM

those guys are pretty cool. my friends went on tour with and tried to get them to smoke weed but they wouldnt.

yeah he's great. Apparently he did a collaboration with the Scottish musician Richard Youngs, who is also a favourite of mine. I need to find that.

good band

monellia 03-02-2008 05:17 AM

I think they're awesome.
What's this I hear about a collab with Richard Youngs :-O damn their being so hard to keep up with

GravitySlips 03-02-2008 06:06 AM

A lot of these Japanese artists tend to be insanely prolific for whatever reason. Boredoms as well have quite a lot of material, and about a million side projects and collabs too.

I've still not heard the collab with Richard Youngs :(

Most of it stands up to a close listen, tho - great for sure if you're into process (which I am) and also great if you just want a huge body of work to dig into. I got to say that although there is much that is similar about every Acid Mothers disc, there is also much that is different - once you've heard enough of it that the details stand out, that is - changes in moods and feels, little ideas that get stretched out and dwelt upon for long long times, hell there's that one disc where they just work a single theme for an hour or so! IAO Chant, that's the one.

Lots of live gigs available here (legally too):

Internet Archive: Acid Mothers Temple

This blows chunks off many stoner bands.

Anteater 12-03-2008 01:33 PM

Bump.

Acid Mothers Temple have always been pretty high on my playlist. :)

Good lucking finding Kawabata's solo stuff though; those CDs are godawful expensive where I've seen them sold online.

Pornographie Nouveau 12-03-2008 01:35 PM

Trippy stuff.

Terrible Lizard 12-04-2008 08:26 PM

One of my favorite bands ever, when I first heard "Poppy Rock" I felt like I had died and reincarnated.

Mojo 12-06-2008 08:21 AM

I love what I've heard of this band, I've been digging them for some time now but a bit like Boris I never knew where to start as there is such a dauntingly HUGE back catalogue therefore I only have Starless and Bible Black Sabbath and Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under The Stars. This seems a good place to ask for some essentials?

Farfisa 12-07-2008 03:17 PM

Aren't they on Sonic Boom's label?

Unbelievable link. Made my day. Thanks.

blackspots 12-15-2008 09:51 AM

whats a good album to start with?

Elastic Man 01-22-2009 02:11 PM

Well 'Pataphysical Freak Out MU!!', 'Univers Zen Ou De Zéro A Zéro', 'Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind!!)', and 'La Nòvia' are all worth seeking out I'd say. Any one of those is probably as good a place as any to start out from.

And it's absolutely true what people say about their live act. I've seen them twice now and both times they were utterly phenomenal.

chelstd 02-01-2009 07:42 AM

Really neat music, definitely much different than what I normally listen to. For anyone that lives near Toronto, ON, they're playing with The Melting Paraiuso UFO on April 14th, at El Mocambo. =)

PS. I've been trying to listen to more of this group - anyone have any albums to recommend? Not necessarily looking for what someone would thinkis their "best", just something people like. (Okay, that didn't make sense, but hopefully you guys dig!)

I started with Space Anthem and Starless and Bible Black, both epic and completely different, uncanny masterpieces.

After listening to both of those albums (seriously, thanks for the great recommendations), I'll have to agree with the latter statements. ;)
