Putting together a live lp from their current tour and then recording a NEW album. Sweet.

Swans

Ah, disregard this

I didn't see the pre-existing Swans thread so mine got merged here

Anyone else listened to this? Live recordings from the recent tour along with demos for the new album. I quite like it myself.

Also, you may have seen my post in the GY!BE thread about the voice in Static being that of a woman that had been slowed down.

Well it turns out the same technique was used in Soundtracks For The Blind on The Beautiful Days and Minus Something. If you speed them up about 17% you can hear what sounds a lot like Jarboe saying the words.

LoathsomePete 02-23-2012 11:51 AM

I'm on the third track of the first disc and it's a pretty dense album. I think I'll save the second album for another time, when the first song is 22 minutes, the second is 8 minutes, and the 3rd is 9, my ADD starts to kick in, plus my new music folder is growing unruly. Overall though I think it's a great album and really makes me want to see them live.

The Bullet 02-23-2012 12:48 PM

I've been meaning to get into Swans for a long time. They've been on my waiting list for like a year. So uh... anyone have uploads?

jackhammer 02-23-2012 06:50 PM

Such an amazing song. Gives me goosebumps.

What music do you normally like?

I love this song too. How I Loved You is the best AoL album in my opinion. I loved the split with Akron/Family too. From my experience not many Swans fans give AoL a fair crack of the whip... which is a massive shame as some of their stuff stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of White Light from the Mouth of Infinity etc.

bob. 02-27-2012 09:14 AM

actually i felt the new Swans album was really nothing more than a noisier AoL album....which in my opinion was absolute heaven

did anybody actually pay for "We Rose From Your Bed With the Sun in Our Head"? and if so how much did you pay?

i think the new songs are wonderful and i love that 30 minute intro....look forward to the new album....and i think a collaboration between Swans and Low would be heaven on earth :)

...The good kind.

But seriously, I listen to basically everything that isn't:

1) Gross top-40 pop-rap that doesn't deserved to be called hip-hop,
2) generic modern rock in the vein of Nickleback,
3) anything that starts with "emo" or ends with "core".

Nasty Nas, Guns 'N Roses and associated acts, Miles Davis, Muse, Bill Frisell, Buckethead, Mendelssohn, Messhugah, Hendrix, Skream, ... all good ****. I felt the need to give examples because most people who say they listen to all types of stuff actually listen to nothing and don't know what to say when people ask.

That being said, I would say... either hit me with either their most essential album (the one where I can decide weather to further explore them or not, if there is an album like that) or their most bizarre and abstract one (I love new sounds.)

bob. 03-01-2012 11:10 AM

thats actually kind of hard.....Swans have been around for quite sometime and have changed their "sound" practically with each album.....although they stick to a general feeling which the music invokes...

That's the problem with Swans, there isn't really a clear starting point because they vary so much.

I suppose the closest thing we could get to that is Children Of God...

Here, try these out:

Swans: Sex, God, Sex - YouTube

Beautiful Child - Swans - YouTube

Swans - Blackmail - YouTube

After listening do you want heavier, lighter or more experimental generally?

Noise Wall 04-04-2012 10:55 PM

I have just recently began exploring the music of Swans. I am not too fond of the early industrial stuff(Though I have not given it too much of a chance), however I am completely infatuated with their early 90s stuff. White Light From the Mouth of Infinity and The Great Annihilator are all I have been able to absorb so far as the Swans are anything but easy listening, but I definitely plan on exploring them more thoroughly.

Anyone recommendations as to which album I should tackle next?

bob. 04-07-2012 09:23 AM

i suggest looking into Angels of Light and Gira's solo effort Drainland

Screen13 04-07-2012 03:44 PM

I will be getting back to listening this stuff. I first heard them on the Smack My Crack compilation way back (Still a damn good listen!).

eccles cake 04-08-2012 12:49 PM

Heads Up.
On the hmv web site it says that "The Burning World" is being re issued tomorrow, that's the 9th of April. I've got it already on vinyl but i'll be getting it on cd too.

You are missing out on some great stuff.

LOVE the cover of the new album :love:

i was already looking forward to this....this just makes it ten fold :)

bob. 06-14-2012 02:52 PM

tours dates to support The Sneer have been release on Young God's website.....Sept. 10th will be a most wonderful night for me

The Batlord 06-15-2012 12:41 PM

I've listened to their first few records, and really dug them, but I'm listening to Children of God for the first time, and it's really captured my imagination. Love, love, love it. Gonna have to really give them a thorough listening to now.

bob. 06-15-2012 01:40 PM

Children of God was an amazing turning point for Swans....the albums get "softer" from there on out....well at least compared to the raw power of Filth and Cop....but in all honesty....at least in my opinion....their feel never really changes....it is just delivered in various ways.....and is ever encompassing :)

Holerbot6000 06-15-2012 02:57 PM

Hi New here - oddly enough, have been listening to Swans/Angels an awful lot lately and in doing so, discovered another band you may have already mentioned - Skins. Just Gyra and Jarboe apparently. The first album (Blood Women Roses) sounds like a Jarboe solo record and is okay, but the second one (Shame Humility Revenge) is terrific - kind of like a deeply weird cross between Angels and Soundtrack for the Blind-era Swans, if that makes sense. Third album has an incredible cover picture of a three headed dog but I have not heard it yet.

Brilliant.

It's my most anticipated album by far, at the moment. They never disappoint, and seeing them was easily one of my top 5 shows.

I actually saw Michael Gira a month or so ago, playing in an old converted church. That was cool as **** too - even moreso as Grouper was supporting. Not much beats the feral intensity of Swans live, though!

Saltwater 07-07-2012 05:34 AM

swans just don't seem to be able to have bad album covers ^^
unless it's bad in a good way :D

joy_circumcision 07-26-2012 11:13 AM

Though it's only crappy transcode and it might improve with the better mastering that we'll get upon official release, the copy of The Seer I heard deflated me quite a bit. Was anticipating it greatly, then I found myself being bored to death by the lack of variation in the drones and textures.

SWANS: THERE’S THE GUY WITH THE PENIS! | L.A. RECORD

thought i'd share this wonderful interview with Gira

a great quote as he describes what he wants Swans to feel like to the listener
"More like if you picture a worm on an anvil and you slam that anvil with a sledgehammer—that’s how I wanted it to be. From the worm’s point of view."

Bumping to ask where I should start with Angels of Light.

James 02-16-2014 07:50 AM

Anybody here seen Swans live? They're coming here soon and I have heard they are quite an experience live - don't know if I would survive it!

I started with We Are Him and it blew my mind but How I Loved You is probably the best technically and mostly everyone's favourite.

I saw them on their My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to The Sky tour. Excellent show. You'll definitely survive but I suggest earplugs - extremely loud. Here's footage of the one I saw..

Personally I think "Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home" is their opus.....

I would love to make you sort of retrospective mix if you want.....I could have it in your pm by Thursday evening and I'll include album titles :)

James....I saw Swans on the same tour as Engine and my only regret is missing them on the Seer tour.....I highly suggest going

I've only heard one song Gira was ever associated with, that I liked:

Brings a sort of awkward contentment to my heart....
