Battles

You guys have to check these guys out:
YouTube - Battles - Atlas (taken from the forthcoming album Mirrored)

IndieShotYou 05-01-2007 03:07 PM

Mirrored is going to be so good.

swim 05-01-2007 03:13 PM

I have all their stuff and Mirrored leak like a month ago, They're sweet shit.

Matious should like this.

...ok, i guess ill check it out >.>

Sparky 05-01-2007 03:30 PM

yeah, i liked it, not-so-hot on the vocals(sounds like alien transmissions coming in >.>) but everything else was dope.

IndieShotYou 05-01-2007 04:39 PM

Glad You Liked it, Lando...

Yeah, I've heard most of the album because of some really intense live footage that I got. Man, I want to see them in concert so bad!

I much prefer their old stuff. Their instrumentals are hella thicker. I'll probably send you some stuff.

okay :)

effervescence 05-03-2007 05:38 AM

Like the video, the slightly gimpy guitar action not withstanding - no need for a strap that short. Not sure about the band in general though.

sleepy jack 06-09-2007 06:21 PM

This band is really fucked up, mainly the vocals i'm finally listening to mirrored now.

GravitySlips 06-10-2007 10:50 AM

without vocals = amazing

with vocals = a bit annoying, but still tight

Ian 06-10-2007 05:43 PM

Battles...wow

I saw them back in March with Lightning Bolt and it was so intense. They put on a great show and Ian Williams is one indie rocks best guitarists ever.

Im seeing them at Pitchfork Music Fest this summer... Im stoked!

ahhh lucky. I wanna go to that. I saw battles with the twilight sad a month or so ago. So good. This band is damn amazing. The new stuff blows the older stuff away. Much more complex.

cardboard adolescent 11-07-2007 07:45 PM

wow they're prog as hell. some of it even sounds like buckethead. pretty interesting

jackhammer 11-07-2007 07:52 PM

If I was shít deep in drugs then it's brilliant! The music is pretty good but c'mon, those vocals are far too gimmicky.

cardboard adolescent 11-07-2007 08:06 PM

all of it feels gimmicky to me so it fits well

it's like mika goes math rock

Joshee 11-08-2007 03:52 PM

I would like it a lot more with different vocals.
Don't they have members from Helmet?
Seems like a big step from metal.

White Lies 11-08-2007 03:57 PM

guy from Don Caballero, guy from Helmet, guy from some other band.

I think it might be the drummer who was in Helmet. Maybe not, duno. Regardless the drummer is ****ing incredible.

joyboyo53 11-09-2007 07:11 PM

Im not gonna lie, I was pumped about seeing these guys live... but when I did I was a little disappointed. They were hyped up to me, and they seemed off, or not mixing well together that night... maybe a bad live show.

asharpsilence 11-14-2007 05:40 PM

u guys have heard ep c/b ep?

thats an awesome little thing there.
that ipt2 is such a great track..

adidasss 12-22-2007 02:07 PM

Ok, I've just concluded that Mirrored could fit perfectly as the soundtrack for Paprika...

...

That's all I have to say...:|

Seltzer 12-22-2007 04:41 PM

Interesting band. I'll probably be seeing them at the Big Day Out this year.

ZERO HEROES 12-23-2007 10:54 PM

Cool video.

Rage Against the Machine 10-20-2008 07:54 PM

So I just collected this band's back catalog today. EP C is awesome, but I haven't given the other EPs a listen yet.

I can't wait for a second LP from these guys.

dallasrockscene 10-23-2008 07:48 AM

wow, old thread - though have to agree on battles being awesome

brenden_Winger 06-19-2009 02:16 PM

Battles!

These guys are awesome! Takes some getting used to their sound.

Amazing drummer, interesting mix of keyboard+guitar, good bass, and distorted vocals make this a band layered in so many ways, that you can listen to them a ton, and find something new each time.

I kinda wish I could find some more work by Tyondai Braxton

Greydon 06-19-2009 02:24 PM

Mirrored is fantastic.

brenden_Winger 06-19-2009 02:30 PM

I think I like Mirrored more than their EPs, although they have some catchy stuff in their old work too.

boo boo 07-14-2009 12:04 AM

By far one of the most talented and promising bands in recent years. I love these guys, Mirrored is an amazing album.

Acadaca 07-16-2009 07:32 PM

They just played at Sydney's Opera house. so pissed off i missed em!

sWACK 07-23-2009 06:05 PM

Oh my god, these guys are ****ing unbelievable! Any more stuff like this?

Terriblescene 07-24-2009 04:06 AM

Awesome video and song, I'm gonna have to look them up now. For some reason, Major Organ and the Adding Machine popped into my head while I was listening though.

Freebase Dali 07-24-2009 04:56 PM

Just found out about these guys. Atlas is phenomenal.
I've yet to hear them sober, though, so I'm hoping it won't be a let down when I do.

doggieluva211 07-31-2009 10:25 PM

My brother played me Atlas and I loved it. The music video for it is awesome too. I also like the song "ddiamondd". If you take the lyrics and look at them without the music it TOTALLY sounds like some poem a disillusioned teen would write.

Tidusauron12 08-03-2009 06:59 PM

I'm not trying to start a war or anything, and I appreciate what this band tries to do in terms of experimenting... but I think they suck badly. "Atlus" is probably their best song (IMO) and I still think it's below mediocre at best.

Do you mean that in terms of their playing skill, or creative ideas?

In a ways, both. I don't think that their compositions allow them to display their playing skills adequately. Not that good music needs to be complex or have shredding...

And as for creativity... their ideas are a bit interesting but they do not go strongly enough in whatever direction they are heading that their songs leave a marked impression on me. In "Atlas" for example, I feel like their something a little too minimalistic and lacking about the music... Essentially, it feels like they're trying a bit too hard to be interesting, so their songs have ambiguous direction - this gives the song a mediocre atmosphere.

This, of course, is my opinion. I'm not sure how musically talented the players are, but in my experience, good composition and creativity can cover up in lack in actual talent. If you have any examples of "cooler" songs from these guys, I'd like to seem them.

Normally I'd have the same view of it if we were talking about anyone else, specifically most of the post-rock groups I've heard.

But there's just something about Atlas. I hear it, I like it. It's as analytical as I get with it.
But I understand where you're coming from.

Don't worry. We all have a couple of bands that we just kind of "like", despite the fact that there's not anything really tangible you can bring to the table in regards to why. Some songs just click.

boo boo 08-06-2009 08:30 AM

I love this band but I can see that like TMV they're gonna get much hate in the future.

I don't know why I rant about it either, 4 years of being a prog fan, I should be used to it by now.
