The thing that bugs me most about Battles are the vocals on the album Mirrored. Though honestly it bugged me most on first listen and wasn't as bad after that. I've probably still only played it 3 times since its release. I find the EPs much more listenable.

boo boo 08-07-2009 10:04 PM

I quite like the vocals actually, it gives it a very f*cked up, out of this world quality.

+81 08-08-2009 12:49 AM

Finally got Tonto+ on vinyl in the mail. Oh frabjous day! In my opinion Battles can do no wrong. Mirrored probably my favorite album of 2007.

mookid 08-14-2009 11:33 AM

Agreed, Mirrored is a classic.
But I must confess, I ****ing detest EP C/ B EP.
Dying to hear a new album...

soothsayer 08-25-2009 09:23 AM

I;m gonna go get some Battles stuff now after hearing some songs.

Which EP's should I get?

+81 08-25-2009 04:46 PM

All of them!

You f-in bastard...I'm not jealous so much that you're seeing Battles (well I am a little bit), but that Flying Lotus and Pivot are on the same bill. I hope you're also planning to attend the next day's festivities, with Clark, Hudson Mohawke and Jimmy Edgar? It would be a shame not to, especially for Clark. Many of these Warp blokes rarely come stateside.

I strongly prefer the EPs to the album, and for me I think it amounts to a lack of vocals on the EPs. Playing B EP right now, I think it's great.

lol, sorry for reviving an old thread but...
they have a new song out called "the line".
freaking awesome, but i hate how it's in the twilight soundtrack DX
oh well, nothing we can do about that.
they also have a few new songs performed live on youtube that kick major butt. check out "ice cream", mirrored had chipmunk vocals, but the song ice cream has deepened vocals. it's pretty sweet.

oh, and is your name an aphex twin reference? if it is, then i'm proud :D

Dayvan Cowboy 07-17-2010 05:22 PM

i take it that battles doesn't get much love :\

+81 07-17-2010 09:47 PM

I love Battles, they desperately need to release a new album though.

oh, they're releasing something soon. they already released a new song and played like, five songs live.

Dayvan Cowboy 08-02-2010 04:56 AM

I got vids off of youtube of their new songs!

(if you listen closely, you can hear somebody say "this song is like a birthday party")

this one's my favorite.^^

also, something tells me that this album will be much darker than Mirrored.

debaserr 08-02-2010 06:39 PM

the only songs i really like off mirrored are race:in, atlas and tonto. but i am eagerly awaiting a new LP.

bob. 08-02-2010 07:06 PM

that damn Atlas song has been stuck in my head for days now! :)

yeah look forward to new music from them....and hopefully a chance to see them live

+81 08-03-2010 12:52 AM

Those new songs sound great, I'm even more excited for the new album now.

Leyendecker really deserves more love.

RnB circa 2050. it's one of my favorites from mirrored.

gotta love the singing. it really annoyed me when mirrored came out and everybody complained about the vocals. deal with it. without the vocals they probably wouldn't be this popular or good. and personally, I have an obsession with tyondai's vocals. he's a good singer :p:.

now, in october they finally start playing live again so hopefully some dude will bring his camcorder and record the new songs they didn't play in 2009 and upload them to youtube. also, the band themselves stated that it's going to be released winter 2010 (December!)

GravitySlips 08-06-2010 07:31 AM

looks like the end of Battles as we know them....

Release The Bats - change of line-up - All Tomorrow's Parties

:yikes: NO! OH GOD!

Tyondai was my favorite!

Rage Against the Machine 08-06-2010 12:21 PM

I'm not gonna lie, I'm really glad they are vocal-less now. His voice is alright sometimes, but a lot of the time the cartoony and stupid aspect of it ruined the sweet-ass funky math jams for me. I'm interested to see where they'll head next.

Dayvan Cowboy 08-06-2010 01:21 PM

aw... the vocals are like the cherry on top.

i'm so sad! :(

double same

Rage Against the Machine 08-06-2010 03:39 PM

I will miss his keyboarding though.

+81 08-07-2010 03:10 AM

Definitely disappointing news but I'm sure the rest of the band will continue to make great music regardless. They're all great musicians, I'm just curious if they'll recruit a new member or in they'll continue with the vocal aspect of the music.

First you post about Amon Tobin's new album and now this? Mr. Sidewinder you just keep filling my days with good news! I'm really curious what the Yamantaka Eye song is going to sound like.

A curious observation...did you go through my quoted post and change the capitalization of things?

debaserr 02-24-2011 06:29 PM

yea, what the hell?

Dayvan Cowboy 03-09-2011 03:42 PM

Still trying to develop an opinion about this one.

sidewinder 03-09-2011 08:34 PM

Hmm, just played for the first time. Not sure either. I probably won't play it again till I hear the whole album.

debaserr 03-09-2011 08:49 PM

it doesn't do much for me. the heavy use of vocals and overall song structure makes it seem like it's a different band.

TockTockTock 03-10-2011 04:58 AM

Sounds like an indie pop band that's a little bit experimental. Fun to listen to, I'll give it that.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 03-10-2011 07:43 AM

Urg...

debaserr 04-10-2011 03:08 AM

gloss drop leaked...

will listen tomorrow

Dayvan Cowboy 04-18-2011 08:32 AM

I'm giving Gloss Drop a listen right now
I thought the album was going to be god awful indie bull**** but currently it's impressing me. At times it even reminds me of their first EPs.
I'll review it in full later.

Chrysalis 04-19-2011 03:26 PM

Ok, I'm excited for the new album. My expectations were lowered for a bit after listening to Ice Cream, but I'm hoping that the rest of the album is better than that.

debaserr 04-19-2011 05:02 PM

sadly it's not.

i'm not sure what I was expecting. it's not like I loved mirrored or anything.

TAIGI 06-17-2011 03:45 AM

Without Tyondai it's quite a different band but very enjoyable nevertheless. Watch their recent live videos - they definitely should make you like Gloss Drop, the same grade of intensity!
