What is pop Animal Collective? Is Strawberry Jam in that category? I figured Merriwether would be, it has a poppier sound generally, but Strawberry Jam has more edge to it for me. Still, i can see it's not as experimental as earlier material (which i need to get), but i'm not good with pop so i wouldn't call it a pop album. Wrong?

It's just Animal Collective. I don't really know if you can categorize their sound to be honest.

Well I've heard some people equate some of their sound (vocalization and general feel of Merriwether) to Beach Boys, while my mom thinks both Merriwether and Strawberry Jam sounds like early Pink Floyd. I can see both comparisons as true in some aspects but i also agree that their sound is unique based on my own limited experience.

You guys must be Crazy.
I just saw Animal Collective live and it was one of The best shows i've ever seen. I could only put it behind Dinosaur Jr. and that's for personal reasons. They were all into it, their stage setup was amazing, and their sound was perfect. I only knew two songs but I liked most of their new material better anyway. And no, their new material is not on the experimental level of Here Comes the Indian, but doesn't have the poppiness of Merriwether. To me, it's like going back to Strawberry Jam but better. And so far that's my favorite album.

Yeah well, I'm an unabashed pop-whore and the primary reason I like/listen to them is for the poppiness.
And what exactly was amazing about their stage setup?

Did they use the SpaceCave thing at the show you went to? When my ladyfriend gets the pictures off of her camera, i'll post one to show you what i mean. I thought it was a cool concept and a really trippy sight to see.

I have a harder time digesting what they made the earlier in their discography I go. I know it was less accessible before and all, and I'm not one to shy away from experimentalism, but the earlier Animal Collective is just not my cup of tea. My own cut-off point is pre-Sung Tongs.
