^ Sung Tongs is too low!
Only say that as it's my favourite, but your list highlights the disparity in their listeners' opinions about their work, I guess. My list would probably be very different! Actually, just swap Strawberry Jam and Sung Tongs and it would look kinda like mine... |

I like the songs on Sung Tongs just fine, but I just can't get into the album as a whole. It just doesn't flow for me. The Softest Voice brings everything to a grinding halt, and Visiting Friends does not get the payoff that it requires. When Slippi explodes out of Two Sails On a Sound on ...Indian, it is one of my favorite musical moments ever. College, while a fine song, just does not work after Visiting Friends. With a different trackorder, it might have moved up on my list. As it is, I never really listen to it.
Strawberry Jam is just a great listen from start to finish. Derek might be their greatest ending track.

I would argue that the appearance of "The Softest Voice" after "Who Could Win A Rabbit?" dies down is incredibly necessary; the entire album is like a reflection of childhood, and after the sugar high of the first two tracks, it's almost like a temporary rest-spot occurs, where the imagination is still incredibly vivid but the music is calm and deconstructed.
Also, "College" works incredibly after "Visiting Friends". "Visiting Friends", being the nostalgic, depressing, slow, brooding thing that it is, is almost utterly depressing... Yet "College" tells you that you don't need to do what you don't want to. After hearing something so emotional and dense, something so simple and positive is almost a necessity. Well, a short rest spot might have been okay, and I could see why it would be there, but Softest Voice just goes on for far too long in my opinion. One of the great things about AC is that they know how to switch things around, to place a breather exactly where it's needed after a sugary rush, but in this case I just think they forgot to switch back. And while I love the lyrics of College, for me it just does not work on a dynamic level.
Anyways, it's not like it's a bad album. I like everything they've done other than Campfire Songs. When you work with dynamics and stretching peoples patience, there is a fine line between genius and boring. Between lulling people into a calm and then jolting them back into action. Or just sort of lulling them into a calm... But it is a very fine album. I just prefer the other ones.

I haven't really gotten into them yet but I've noticed they have some of the lamest songtitles ever.

I've finally given the band a listen by listening to Strawberry Jam and Merriweather Post Pavilion. Now i like the cohesion of the latter album, and it can be really catchy (especially My Girls), but it doesn't jump out and shake me about like Strawberry Jam does. A lot of the songs are really haunting with the atmosphere and lyrics on it. Merriweather does have songs that build really well, but like i said, it doesn't grab me like Jam does.
I also like Grass. Any recommendations?
