Their early albums are far more experimental than anything they've put out recently.

I love Sung Tongs, but I think Feels is where the band really starts to come together. Plus I love Avey and Panda's singing, which is highlighted on Feels and Strawberry Jam.
But I'm really digging Meriweather right now, which is funny because Deakin didn't do any work on it and I really dig his guitar playing in the other albums.

I saw them in concert last Monday and although I loved it, they sound better on their albums. I think Merriweather Post Pavillion is such a talented leap from their previous albums. You could see the audience responded much better to the songs from that album than the previous ones.

Unfortunately, the crowd didn't help. Most of them were under-21ers (no offense to those under 21 here) who seemed to not even know any of the songs but were there because NPR likes them and Pitchfork raved about them. You could see slightly older crowd outside the venue offering 100 bucks trying to get tickets because they were real fans. It would have probably been a more enjoyable experience if more real fans had been there. When i looked around and me and my roommate were the only people over 21 in our vicinity, it was a little annoying. Everyone is texting and posing for pictures and you are just trying to enjoy the concert.

What struck me most about them live was how well the harmonies worked and the vocal exchanges. They don't sound as good as on the album but worked amazingly well. They put off such good energy that a more formidable crowd would have fed off it and made the whole mutualism of performer and audience work a lot better.

Wonderful band though. Can't wait to see them again.

(FYI, saw them at 930 club in DC)

Default Animal Collective

I have a friend who has been trying to get into Animal Collective. I also have been listening to their music, but I can't seem to find what is so amazing about them. Is there something I am missing?
