1.) Feels (a gentle album)
2.) Merriweather Post Pavillion (for consistency of vision and fewer extreme/jarring bizarrities)
3.) Sung Tongs ("Winter's Love" is, for me, the best individual AC track)
4.) Strawberry Jam
5.) Person Pitch (Panda Bear)

I haven't heard the new Dan Deacon album, so I have not included it here.
Huh? What does Dan Deacon have to do with Animal Collective? There was a "Deakin" in the band but his name is Josh Dibb.

My list of favorite to least favorite Animal Collective (non solo) albums would be;

1. Feels
2. Merriweather Post Pavilion
3. Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
4. Strawberry Jam
5. Sung Tongs
6. Here Comes the Indian

Hope I havn't chased anyone away from this thread with my clumsiness. I think I stipulated somewhere that I am not yet thoroughly familiar with this oeuvre. I have not, for example, listened to the earlier AC albums like "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" or "Here Comes The Indian". Silly (and probably avoidable) contextual and biographical mistakes are thus to be expected.

The farther back you go into AC's catalogue, the more diverse their music gets. The back albums aren't terrible... just, different.

I really like Feels and Sung Tongs.

Id say a decent way to start would be by checking out Spirit They've Gone Spirit They've Vanished, Sung Tongs, and Merriweather Post Pavillion. That'll give you a decent idea of their varying styles and from there id make my next three Feels, Strawberry Jam, and Campfire Songs. This band used to be one of my favorites but I hadnt listened to them for about a year or more. When MPP originally came out I wasnt too impressed but the other day a friend of mine played it in his car and now im addicted. I need to listen to their whole discography again but my list for them is something like:
Merriweather Post Pavillion
Spirit Theyve Gone Spirit Theyve Vanished
Sung Tongs
Strawberry Jam
Feels
Campfire Songs
Danse Manatee
Here Comes the Indian

I think Feels is a good starter album to get as it incorporates most of the styles they use without the roughness of the earlier stuff. Merriweather is brilliant but a bit watered down compared to the rest of the AC albums.

I have read that for some "Sung Tongs" marks the divide between AC's "rougher" early sound and their "more polished" later style, while for others this divide is definitively marked by "Feels". Again, I profess ignorance in this matter since I am a recent convert and have not yet had a chance to listen to their earliest work. As far as I am concerned, though, Sung Tongs has some remarkably "polished" work on it. "Feels" has a more electronic sound rather than an acoustic one, but surely this is not analogous to the difference between rough and polished? (But then again, I suppose "rough" and "polished" are not necessarily markers of "bad" and "good" . . .)

I feel the same way. "Strawberry Jam" and "Merriweather Post Pavilion" are my favorite AC albums and my tastes in music tend to lead toward experimental and avant-garde... I just really didn't care for their early stuff I guess.
