i just discovered this genre. this is the best music i've heard i a long, long time. where have i been?

so far i've listened to a bit of Tortoise, a bit of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a bit of Sigur Rós, and a bit of Explosions in the Sky.

i love it all, and i want more! somebody please kick me a list of artists to check out. this is so exciting!

edit: never mind. i'm just going to start on page one and start downloading

Good job you edited that as I was definitely going to suggest starting with the compilation on the first page. Theres lots of bands to check out that arent on that list naturally but it's definitely the place to start.

i've been going through this whole thread and i think there are more artists listed here than i have in my whole library music collection. is there really that much of this genre out there? i can't believe i've never heard any of this before.

i'm listening to Explosions' All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone right now. granted it's my birthday and i've had a few drinks so i'm already in a great mood, but this album is phenomenal! this music has so much energy, so much spirit, i've never heard anything like it in my life. i can't remember the last time i found new music that i like this much.

Explosions In The Sky were one of the first post rock bands I listened to and they really helped me get into the genre. The genre is huge now yeah, sometimes it feels like every other band I hear of is a post rock band theres so many of them out there now. A lot of them will go unheard of really as for the most part its not exactly very radio friendly or anything.

Definitely something worth exploring though.

Whoever I get in the weekly trade thing is probably going to get a Bell Orchestre album, anyone else into them? They're one of the few post rock bands I've heard that have mastered the use of horns + strings. There's a few members of the Arcade Fire mixed into the line up, if that helps in giving any indications of what they sound like...

ok so i've acquired a few gigs of this music so far...

i'm enjoying Sigur Ros tremendously. God is an Astronaut is great. i'm also trying Red Sparowes. they're much more metal-sounding than i usually go for, but i'm still having fun with it. oh, and Godspeed is just fantastic, i love the samples they use, it fits the music perfectly! and i recognize East Hastings from 28 Days Later. awesome track.

but i'm liking Explosions more than any other. it's much more melodic than the others i've tried, if that makes sense. less droning, more musical. any recommendations along those lines? i tried all the top artists that are similar according to last.fm, but none have the same cheerful melancholy as Explosions

EitS are really the only post-rock that I've heard that have that little 'hopeful' tune throughout their music. Wish I could recommend some similar artists, but as far as my knowledge goes, there really aren't any.
