Annoyingly, I can't post links. Go to trts dot com if you like Tortoise to hear their new thing.
These are incredibly solid recommendations (if I do say so myself) for fans of Tortoise:

Cougar - Law (produced by John McEntire of Tortoise)
Cougar - Patriot
Pivot - Make Me Love You
Lateduster - Easy Pieces

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

So I'm trying to listen to more post-rock, and I've listened to Godspeed You! Black Emperor and I really liked that. So I got two Mogwai cd's "happy songs for happy people" and "mr. beast" from the library, which one would be best to start with?

and what bands should I look in to next?

You'd get some reals kicks out of Tortoise and Kashiwa Daisuke, so go for them next.

You can't go wrong with Kashiwa. He takes World's End Girlfriend's style and expresses it totally differently.

I recommend you these:

Red Sparowes
Ef
Pg.Lost
Mono

You can't go wrong with any of these but you gotta listen to ef because they are simply awesome. Try their debut Give Me Beauty...Or Give Me Death! album.

I don't know why I'm so excited for This Will Destroy You's Tunnel Blanket. I doubt it's going to be good, but I'm probably going to love it. Apparently some singles are out containing new tracks, if anybody else is interested in them.

For those of you who aren't, it's post-rock by the numbers that works (at least to me):

Check out that album cover, too! A BEAR WITH A HOUSE ON ITS BACK!

Unessential but damn good listening.

This is the first post-rock album I have ever heard. I've been meaning to start listening to more post-rock but I don't know where to start? I only have that album and two by Explosions In The Sky. Any essential or just "badass" album recommendations?

Ef-Give Me Beauty Or Give Me Death!
Mogwai-Mr. Beast (Young Team is actually my favorite Mogwai album, but I consider it less post-rockish)
God Is An Astronaut-All Is Violent, All Is Bright

I'm also very, very partial to Golevka by The Evpatoria Report, but it can be somewhat of a daunting listen at first (similar to GY!BE, I guess). The last track is just stunningly epic and beautiful though. Unbelievably amazing.
