Is it just me or is the whole Post Rock thing getting very very stale now? I was revisiting a few bands earlier this week such as Do, Make, Say, Think and there are so many bands that sound virtually the same. I love atmospheric stuff but the scene has it's fair share of copycat bands with no identity of their own. Bands such as Soul Of The Phoenix who are using more Electronica and branching off a little genre wise are far more appealing to me these days.

Post rock, for me, has never been about originality. I've been pretty much aware of the similarities between bands throughout, it's just never bothered me too much. I know what to expect from a post-rock band.

I just feel that not enough bands are making enough effort in the genre and because Post Rock generally eschews vocals, the need to stand out a little from the crowd is more preferable to me these days.

I lost interest in the post rock/metal thing a while ago. The only bands I still listen to are ISIS, Neurosis, Red Sparowes and Jakob from time to time.
Mind you, Mono is coming here and I might see them despite the fact I've heard they're boring live. Tickets are cheap anyway.

I agree with you LoathsomePete, the genre is saturated with bands that sound virtually the same. And without vocals, it's really hard to distinguish yourself. But the genre itself requires a lot of patience. The more you get familiar with a band or album, the more you can differentiate it from others. And even then yes they can be very similar. I could probably also delete a good chunk of mine and not miss them. When it's good it's good but it's not a genre I plan to fully explore like I do other genres, because it's kind of pointless after a while.
I feel the same about electronic sometimes, since much of it is instrumental. But I'm a little better at picking out the useless stuff there. It doesn't take as long to figure out if something is too simplistic or too much of a copycat, or quality. I think really it boils down to it being instrumental. Take punk, alternative rock, grunge, metal, etc. Now remove vocals. Granted some bands will stand out from the rest, but the rest will sound samey very quickly.

I really like my post-rock and post-metal bands, but I wouldn't be jumping up and down to go see many of them live. I've spent a lot of time this year digging up new bands and reacquainting myself with ones who've fallen off my radar. There's been a lot of good releases this year, Pelican's album What We All Come To Need, Russian Circle's Geneva, Mono's Hynm To The Immortal Wind just to name a few. I find the music is really good for writing as the absence of lyrics means there's nothing interfering with my thought process.

For me it's great reading and working music, for the same reason that there are no lyrics to distract. Same reason I listen to so much electronic and instrumental hip hop.
