Is the June of '44 album Engine Takes To The Water worth a listen?

I have a number of suggestions if you're open to them. One band I particularly like is Hammock, though some of their material can be more or less ambient, so it may not be for you.

I have Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light. Like you said, I really like their use of the horns with the strings, the horns particularly. I love Recording a Tunnel off of this album a lot, it's really a great listen, especially as someone who enjoys ambient and avant-garde type music.

Is there anything else out there that really seems to build up and get to an epic level (other than the obvious bands)?

Yes, yes, yes, oh fucking god yes. If you like the guitars and vocals in Slint then that's a great album to get started with.

I'm kind of a newcomer to the whole post-rock genre. Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros and Mogwai are my the only artists I really know well, Mogwai being my favorite.

I really like big-sounding, atmospheric music, so I've been enjoying this type of music a lot.
