Where's the appreciation for Jessamine, Labradford, Laika, Main, Jim O'Rourke, and Ui. Somehow, some of my favorite post-rock/experimental bands were left off. Nonetheless, some great bands have already been mentioned.

Check out Russian circles - Enter & Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway, The Beyond, Eternal Kingdom(Their 2008 release).
All are excellent albums.

Nice thread though...discovered quite a few lesser known post-rock bands.

Is Kayo Dot really post rock? I know they have some Post Rock Tendencies, mainly in Choirs of the Eye, but not enough to warrant a Post Rock tag.

I generally just put them in the "amazing" genre, anyways.

It's the easiest bracket to put them into. You could easily replace that with Film Soundtracks as a lot of post rock uses the same deconstructionial soundscapes prevalent on many soundtracks. I personally cannot stand the term 'Post Rock' and would much prefer to use something like 'Ambient Rock' but the tag has already stuck!

While I dislike pidgeonholing, I really can't think of a better suited name than post-rock for some bands. But yes, it is a rather bizarre term that has spawned a plethora of rediculous subgenres that borders on tedium.

If that makes you feel happier then go for it! I still much prefer 'Ambient' which is what it exactly is. Maybe the terms 'Ambient' and 'Rock' are so diameterically opposed that people are afraid to use them together. It is usually music that you chill out to that is played within a traditional rock set up!
