Well, I listened to it again after I don't know how long and... I still don't like it.

Don't get me wrong, it was interesting! It kept my attention! But I didn't ENJOY listening to it. I wasn't thinking, "Man this is great! This is surely going to be on rotation a lot now!" I was more thinking, "Meh. Whatever."

It had tons of cool parts, but as a few have said, the spoken word is NOT used effectively. It just sort of drones on, and not in a good way. The parts where there was singing, in that high-pitched, frantic screech? That was brilliant. I was really liking there. But then he would just go back to mumbling, and I would go back to not caring.

It would have been much better as a purely instrumental album, or if he cut the stupid mumbling and just sang/screamed.

And I am probably in the very very small minority here... but I liked Tweez much better than Spiderland.

I think I've heard quite a few people say they like Tweez more. As for the mumbling thing, I wonder if that was just more common to hear 15-20 years ago because, while not everybody cared for Slint, I don't remember that specific complaint back then. McMahan did it in The For Carnation too and I vaguely remember plenty of bands mumbling through long songs.
Oh well, cheers for giving the album another shot.

There was a two week period last summer where all I listened to was this. I love it. For some reason this album makes me feel like I'm in a really ****ed up, black and white version of like a Leave it to Beaver type world, where everything looks normal, maybe too normal on the surface, but then when you look closer everything is evil. I don't know why though. I usually don't listen to this at night for those reasons, this album is actually pretty scary then.

Chives

Every once in a while I can dig it. I rarely find myself listening to the vocals very intently, but when I just listen to the instruments I have a blast. Hell, I should probably listen to it more often but I forget about it.

However, I can't help but feel that, since I only know about this album because it's cited as being so influential, there might be musically-similar albums I'd enjoy more if I heard them. Any suggestions?

Spiderland isn't an album that I listen to very frequently but when I do stick it on it is a very enjoyable listen. It's one of those albums that I really have to be in the mood for. I don't really care much for the vocals or lyrics, it's all about the guitar interplay between Brian McMahan and David Pajo and the song structures for me.

As for a musically similar album the most similar that I can think of is June Of 44 - Four Great Points. I wouldn't say that it's any better or worse than Spiderland but there's definitely a strong Slint influence going on.

midnight rain

Definitely have to go with amazing on this. The screaming at the end of the final track Good Morning Captain is about raw of emotion as it gets in music, gives me goosebumps every time. Some of the tracks like For Dinner are a bit of a bore, but Noseratu Man, Breadcrumb Trail, and GMC are all genre classics.

Definitely check out Tortoise.

Yeah the vocals are more a novelty for me. They aren't the lead, like normal vocals, but they definitely add some atmosphere. Kinda like the background voices in Paranoid Android during "What's thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat".

Never heard of this album until recently when I saw it recommended on a 'best of' list. Now I'm wondering if it is worth buying or not.
