Can
well, as you can tell from my avatar, i dig can.
hard to describe them, they were WAY ahead of their time. i only know 1 album but it would probably be their most famous, and finest, Tago Mago. those who are into earlier works of pink floyd, the mars volta, experimental wackiness or prog rock in general will love this. Tago Mago is quite amazing for it's time (1971), can't believe people had the creativity like this back then. http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...56886p0pkv.jpg check out the songs "Paperhouse" and "Mushroom". |
Yay for the Kraut Rockers.

Can
Trying to get a friend to like Can She can Handle Fujiya and Miyagi but just can't do CAN any suggestions
|
I love Can. Their records are totally uncompromising artistic statements.
Try Monster Movie. |
can
Tried Monster Movie with no luck, Gonna try ege bamyasi. I'm so green should do the trick. What do you make of Fujiya and Miyagi?
|
I'd go with some of the later stuff like Saw Delight or Flow Motion. I find that stuff less challenging & more funky.
|
Can
Flow motion is worth a try haven't heard it for a while. Thanks
|
Has anybody seen the DVD yet. I rented it off Amazon this week.
Very disappointing for this Can head. |
Tago Mago is one hell of an album.

Can
Practically everyone here is familiar with Krautrock's favorite band: the immeasurably talented Can. I can't believe it, but I checked over and over and somehow we don't have a Can thread.
http://homepage3.nifty.com/fwks/can_photo_16.jpg If you're unfamiliar with the avant-garde band, they are an amalgamation of many different styles of music. Years ahead of their time (and certainly much of ours), Can's ethereal throbbing beat has been at the forefront of some of the most perfectly scripted albums. They represent an enormous contribution to music - not just Krautrock - and their influence is enormous and far-reaching at that. I suggest you listen to these three unilaterally praised albums: Tago Mago Ege Bamyasi Future Days |
There probably is a can thread, but it's impossible to find a band with a name that's less then four characters (or one that is comprised of two words that are both less then four characters.) This is excatly why we need a better search engine, but alas there is nothing that can be done.
Edit: Found it, try using a popular album by a band. That seems to work too. http://www.musicbanter.com/classic-r...12316-can.html |
About time someone bumped this...
I've got Tago Mago and it's just fantastic (Halleluwah is porbably one of my favourite ever 'songs'). Any idea where I should go next with them? |
I suppose get Ege Bamyasi and future days next. If you'd like to be a bit more adventurous though, get their debut, Monster Movie. It's a bit raw and perfectly portrays the ideas they had - Repetitive, simple, energetic yet way ahead of its time.

Im really digging Soundtracks at the moment. The last two tracks, Mother Sky and She Brings The Rain are two of the finest songs Can created i think. Amazing stuff.

Yes, good to see fellow MBers diggin' on Can, too. :)
My first listen was Ege Bamyasi and was instantly hooked. Then, I bought Landed, which was a little disappointing compared to E.B.. |
Ege Bamyasi is an excellent record. "Sing Swan Song" is probably my favorite track from that one. I'd like some recommendations on what another good one would be.

Soundtracks Future Days |
The 4 i've heard in order of bestest:
Ege Bamyasi Soundtracks (only had about 2 listens so far but its got potential) Tago Mago (only just because i'm still not big on the second half) Future Days |
Ege Bamyasi took a long time to grow on me, though I now enjoy it a lot. Tago Mago is the quintessential for my money. But there's also a lot of live CAN floating around the web, especially from the Damo Suzuki period, which is very nice, though sound quality varies widely.
|
Monster Movie is teh bestest :D
(but I like all Can) |
Tago Mago will never get old. EB:
I’m so green, I’m so green, “Yes, I feel everything” you say, Yes, I feel as you say. |
It's not strictly later stuff at all but i think Delay 1968 is massively underrated, it may be my favourite behind Ege Bamyasi. Soundtracks gets better and better with every listen too.

Tago Mago > Ege Bamyasi > Future Days > Monster Movie > Soundtracks > Delay 1968 I enjoy them all tho. |
I haven't made a post in a hell of a long time, but I thought that here would be a great place to stick my foot back into the forum's door, so to speak.
I have been a Can fan for a while now, but just recently (about 3 or so weeks ago), I became utterly and completely enamored with their sound. At this point, I think it's safe to say that these guys have become my all-time favorite band (Until now, The Beatles have consistently been my favorite band for about 5 or so years now). As much as I love the Beatles, I just can't believe the tremendously creative and innovative output Can has. Their music hits me in a way that few other bands can. At this point, I have a total of 8 Can albums, which are: Monster Movie Soundtracks Tago Mago Ege Bamyasi Future Days Soon Over Babaluma Landed Delay 1968 My current favorite is Monster Movie. I really dig the raw sound the album consistently carries. The most standout track is obviously "Yoo Doo Right." It's absolutely stellar. The song flows so incredibly well. The tribal drumming, Malcom Mooney's love-letter chanting, the kickass guitar riffs, I could go on... After MM, I'd say that my favorite album would either be Ege Bamyasi or Tago Mago (really tough call). All 8 of the albums that I have are eithier very good or fantastic. I can't believe how consistently great these guys are with their sound. All hail Krautrock! |
I've been listening to "Ogam Ogat" lately. It's 2 tracks from the Tago Mago recording sessions, not on the album.

So am I the only one who listens to their post 75 stuff then?
|
I really can't imagine Can without Damo. Was their new vocalist on the same level as him?
|
They didn't replace him.
Michael Karoli & Irmin Schmidt handled the vocals after he left. |
I'm still listening to their three most renowned ones regularly but I'm going to expand upon them this summer. Future Days will likely stay my favorite, but I feel it's necessary to hear what else they've done.
|
Ooh, bringing back the Can thread. Nice. My favorite is still Ege Bamyasi.

I barely hear anyone talk about it though. Got a favorite track?
EDIT: Well, my favorite track from the album is "Sing Swan Song". Look at what I just found: I guess Kanye West likes Can, too. |
I couldn't pick a favourite album.

Looks like Sing Swan Song is the one for Kanye but. wow. |

Slightly off topic but I was in Germany over the weekend and I met some colleagues of my mates who have alternative taste in music and are both in their late 20's but have never even heard of Krautrock or the bands I mentioned despite being German. I didn't know whether to be angry, disappointed or have the realisation that I listen to far too much music :(
