I don't understand the comparisons with discord. As far as I understand, it's an instant communication platform, therefore the opposite of a forum. I never joined discord because I'm not interested in immediate communication. So for me, discord is definitely not a replacement for this forum.

Agreed. MB could be various things, but one of those things should be a proper forum.

Edit:

As for archive, we have it here. Copy over your journals / album reviews and other things of note. Who cares what happens to the 99 9% of the rest of our inane banter? Let it slip into oblivion and start fresh.

Can we not steal the database somehow?

We can't steal the database (well, without hacking into Yac's / the admin's account), but you can create a static copy of the website.

If I remember correctly, MB runs on vbulletin. You can ask advameg nicely for a copy of the db. Then you could set up a new vbulletin (or possibly some other compatible forum) and import the database, essentially restoring mb with all users, posts, etc. in a new location. But they're not gonna let that happen.

To be fair here (and I may be speaking for him, but I think it's obvious) I'm pretty sure Guybrush meant that 95% of "Lounge"-style threads are old and unlikely to be revisited, so that the massive bulk of threads like those could be jettisoned. I mean, are YOU going to go back to page 43 of a 900-page thread looking for something? If those threads were to be "ported", then I would suggest, if it could be done, the last maybe ten pages of each would be sufficient to allow current conversations to be carried on. As he says, other than that, mostly it's just empty waffle nobody is going to read again.

Maybe not, but you have to admit some of those pages are entertaining.

Course they are. But how far back are you ever going to go? Preserving hundreds/thousands of pages on the offchance someone may want to look back through them and either read or bring back to life a discussion (probably started by or featuring someone who is no longer here) surely seems like a big waste of time and resources?

Oh, I agree. Just saying there's a lot of entertainment there.
