I don't know if that name has now been dropped, but in Britain,50 years back, the first generation of Jamaican immigrants were called West Indians. At the time that was considered the most respectful description, much better than referring to a guy's skin colour for example - though I don't think I ever asked a Jamaican how he felt about the label.
