Let's talk about the search function

Why does it fucking suck so much?

90% of my experience with the search bar goes like this:

Ori: lol, remember when Batlord talked how he stared at the sun, and now he's permanently blind? I wish I could find that hilarious gem. *types "sun" into search*

Search: NAH. U GOTTA GIMME MORE LETTERS THAN THAT IF U WANT THE GOOD STUFF, BOI.

Ori: Damn. Wait, I think Batlord also mentioned getting kicked in the cock. Let me try that. *types cock into search*

Search: NAH, U GOTTA WAIT.

Ori: How long?

Search : LIKE, TEN MORE SECONDS.

Ori: Why?

Search: CUZ THAT'S HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR ME TO GET HARD AGAIN, BOI.

Ori: Uh, okay. *waits ten seconds, and types cock in again*

Search: I KNOW U GOT MORE LETTERS THAN THAT, BOI.

Ori: Damn it! Wait, I remember him also mentioning a bunch of other things, and some of them were like five or six letters long. *types all that stuff into the search bar*

Search: OH, U THOUGHT U COULD SEARCH FOR MULTIPLE WORDS AT ONCE? NAH, I DON'T DO THAT. I CAN CHECK POSTS FOR ONE KEYWORD *OR* ANOTHER, BUT I CAN'T LOOK FOR ALL THEM KEYWORDS IN ONE POST.

Ori: Why not?!

Search: 'CAUSE I GOT STANDARDS, BOI

Ori: Whatever. How about... *types a long and specific keyword*

Search: NAH, U GOTTA WAIT.

Ori : *suicide*

Is there anything the mods can do to fix it, or are we just stuck with it?

OccultHawk 10-21-2017 10:08 AM

Call advanmag

They're probably going to shut this whole mother****er down sooner or later.

Treasure will be lost.

Frownland 10-21-2017 10:11 AM

Trying to figure out whether or not there's a thread for Can is hell.

There is a fix: Google.com

Search me.

Yeah just filter your google searches with "site:www.musicbanter.com"

You don't need the quotes I was just trying to stop it getting parsed into a URL.

GD 10-21-2017 04:18 PM

I think you can search for multiple words if*you*put*asterisks*between*them ftr
Also you can search for complete strings of words by using quote marks

Goofle 10-22-2017 06:10 AM

Nothing we can do as mods. Could send out the Yac-signal, but I guess it would have been improved already.

OccultHawk 10-22-2017 09:11 AM

Make me a mod and I'll search everything manually.

FYI Ori, if you're doing a multiple keyword search, throw in an AND between keywords and that problem's solved.

Gotta use the 'noparse' function.

Yeah, I know. Too bad that shit don't fly with the MB search function.

The MB search function is a no-fly zone.

Er, it does for me.

Paul Smeenus 10-27-2017 05:45 PM

This site's search function chews massive butt, use Google + "music banter".

Nah, it automatically converts the AND to OR.

Interesting, never found that one. Thanks.

That's really weird. I just did exactly the same search, and it worked for me. It seems the search function is even more unpredictable than we'd imagined.

Trollheart 10-27-2017 07:47 PM

It just hates Ori.
"Who is doing search? Ori. Confirm identification of user. User identification confirmed. Run program x://users/mods/search/ fuckori.exe. Program running. Engage asshole mode: asshole mode engaged. Execute!"

Why would a program use an exclamation mark?

It can be used like NOT to reverse a Boolean value. So Execute(NOT) although if the blank space compiles as FALSE then it's TRUE anyway so... what was the question?

I see you're a parsetongue.

Cos it's sentient, and hates Ori.

Trollheart 12-23-2020 03:11 AM

Can someone possibly look into why I can't search? I'm looking for stuff in my journals and every time I hit search it comes up with a database error. Thanks.

Marie Monday 12-23-2020 03:41 AM

I'm technologically very inept, but I can try. You can't search at all? It works fine for me

adidasss 12-23-2020 03:47 AM

Same with me but only sometimes for specific searches. :/

Marie Monday 12-23-2020 03:50 AM

Worse than normal or is it just the search function being its capricious self?

Thanks Marie.
No, go into any of my journals and click "Search this thread", add in anything (Santa, Christmas, Iron Maiden - anything that should come up) and you won't get a failure message but a database error. At least, I do.
Maybe there's some problem with my browser? It's worked before though. Pretty annoying as I'm trying to find a particular article in one of the journals and it's next to impossible.
TH

Marie Monday 12-23-2020 04:07 AM

Oh I see, I get it too. No idea what causes it though

Trollheart 12-23-2020 04:21 AM

Well at least it's not just me. Maybe Plankton might have some idea; he's very computer literate. I don't know if it can be fixed, but it is pretty annoying. I know Frownland once checked something similar for me with the top guy, I forget his name? He might be able to help.

Oh yeah. Yac, that was it.
Thanks
TH

adidasss 12-23-2020 04:27 AM

Yeah this has never happened to me before when doing searches so something must be going on. It's not very often but it does happen sometime. And it doesn't appear to be related with timing but specific topics of search.

Trollheart 12-23-2020 05:14 AM

As far as I can see, it seems to happen only in the journals section. I can search outside, in the main forum, but not in my journals.

Yac's a girl now.

Plankton 12-23-2020 06:42 AM

I've had this problem too with "Search This Thread". No clue as to why, but it's been like that for a while now. The only work-around is to use the Advanced Search where you can select individual forum sections instead of the entire forum. It narrows it down a bit.

Trollheart 12-23-2020 12:14 PM

Thanks Plankton but no, it doesn't work within the journals section. There's not much of an advanced search anyway, but even using it still returns me to the database error. :(

Try it from your own journal and see if you can search (or from mine, or anyone else's).

I was talking about going to the main page and using the Search function in the bar with "User CP/Blogging/New Posts/Search/Quick Links/Log Out" options.

Okay cool that worked thanks, and I was able to find the article I was looking for. Muchos gracias amigo!
