Suggested feature - tag users in posts

Hey guys and gals!

I noticed that someone has made a mod for vbulletin which allows for twitter/facebook style tagging of users in a post. For example, let's say I mention Janszoon in a post and I want him to notice. I could just add @ in front of his name (@Janszoon) and then Jans will get a notification that he's been mentioned in my post when he checks out his User CP .. or something along those lines.

[DBTech] Advanced User Tagging v3 (vB4) - vBulletin.org Forum

People probably know and enjoy this functionality from twitter, facebook and other social sites which have already had such functionality for years and I also think it would be a great addition to MB.

To those who want to point out that actual implementation of my suggestion has about a snowball's chance in hell, I'd like to thank you in advance for your knowledge and tell you I too know all about that (so feel free not to point it out), but as they say : nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Actually I think this would be a great thing to implement in the boards. I missed an entire conversation that was directed at me but it got lost in pages of replies.

Oh god, no. This isn't Facebook/Twitter.

Just get over the fact that it's a common feature on social media sites and look at the benefit. Someone writes a review of an album that they think another would like? Tag them. Trying to have an on topic conversation in a thread that's also home to an ongoing ****storm between a few members? Tag the person your directing your reply to and there's less of a chance they'll miss it. There's no reason to keep the forum stuck in the Stone Age because tagging is 'uncool.' Besides, I think we sold out a long time ago with the friends and visitor message features.

I think it's a cool idea.

The possibility that I could get notified if someone mentions me in a post? Oh God no!

Thanks dreadnaught :)

Great idea. Simple as that.

That's the spirit!

Let's use a more boring site layout while we are at it. I think grey would do the job.

Although FB has it's quirks, and a lot of people bash it, it does have some value in the sense that it's a great tool for communication, and some of it's tools for doing that are really good. If you can import some of that technology into another communication driven application, then by all means why the **** not.

Focusing on the facebook/twitter comparison here seems pretty daft to me anyways.

Obviously, notifying users that they've been mentioned/tagged in a post is not going to turn musicbanter into twitter or facebook. It's just a simple feature, not a complete site makeover.

Damn, talk about being the odd man out. Apparently its frowned upon to disagree with an idea. Good to know.

If anything, I think it's the lack of substance in your disagreement and it's consequent lack of value which seems frown-worthy.

But I'm sorry for taking the piss. I am grateful for any feedback, so feel free to lay it on me.

I just don't think we need it. I'd rather not getting notifications all the time just because my name was mentioned in a post. Especially since it would show under your post count how many times you've been mentioned. It'd get annoying real quick.

If you didn't like it, you would have the option to turn it off.

YorkeDaddy 05-29-2015 08:44 AM

It would not show anything under your post count lol

Guybrush 05-29-2015 08:46 AM

Also, it wouldn't notify you every time your nick is mentioned. Poster would have to purposely tag you (with '@') which means they are trying to get your attention.

Plankton 05-29-2015 08:50 AM

It's basically the same as searching the site for your name, so it's more a convenience than anything new, other than the 'idea' of introducing the ability to tag people to the forum masses.

^kind of like a XenForo forum, but they call it "Alerts".

Goofle 05-29-2015 08:58 AM

After checking it is a XenForo site. Not sure if it's available here, but I guess it could be easily implemented in the "User CP" section.

Another site I frequent did a complete overhaul from vBulletin to XenForo, and it was a mess for a while, but now it's really quite attractive, and rich with features not available in the older developed packages.

Ninetales 05-29-2015 11:32 AM

yeah I would be in favor of this. cant really think of an instance that this would be annoying tbh and it would be more than just a little useful for recs and things.

Cuthbert 06-01-2015 04:55 PM

Good idea, works on other forums. Don't know if @Administrator will #PullHisFingerOutAndSortIt though.

RT @fiddler Actually I think this would be a great thing to implement in the boards. I missed an entire conversation that was directed at me but it got lost in pages of replies.
