You’re gonna have to open more than that I’m afraid.

I've noticed over the years that I'm a horrible friend therapist. I find it hard to empathize with the problems that my friends tell me, and therefore find it difficult to give them actual advice that I'm proud of giving. Sometimes I've given poignant advice but I find it happens less often than not. Am I a sociopath?

I think a lot of people struggle with finding the "right" thing to say and end up staying silent when in actuality the most helpful thing is usually just listening and empathizing. Just like any therapist you're job isn't to solve their problems, but rather to listen and offer validation. When I go to a friend to vent I'm not looking for solutions, I'm looking for solidarity and the reminder that I'm cared for.
