I'm responding to posts made in the Paris Attacks thread here because I agree with what Frownland did and ended the discussion in that thread. I just wanted to throw in my two pennies...

I've been on here for years now and I've never complained about the mods, but the arbitrary nature in which JWB was banned bothers me, because he wasn't the primary instigator.

I know it was addressed, but I just want to highlight that JWB received SO MANY warnings about his behavior on here. Note what I said above about calling somebody a f*ggot. I didn't even ban him a day for that. I warned him. His warnings ran out.

It's fine, I went about it the wrong way anyways. One time I legit permabanned someone somewhere because they said all non-electronic music was stupid. Then I signed them up for a spam grenade. You guys should seriously consider it, adds some real consequences. Instead of finding a new forum they also need to find a new email address.

The use of gender/sexual orientation related slurs has increased since Sansa/WD haven't been here to say anything about it to the people using them, and it's not just JWB.

Seriously, I think the use of that term can be gauged. If it's used offensively, fine, warn or ban. If it's used humorously, maybe try to see the joke. If, for instance, someone I knew said "Ah you listen to those ***gots Marillion" or "What would a *** like you know about grindcore?" I would take precisely zero offence. I think the relationship to the person using the "slur" and the one used on, the intent and the foreseeable circumstances should all be taken into account. In the case of either of the above, can anyone see the likes of me running (hell with that: I'm too old to run anywhere!) to the mods to complain of being called a ***?

Of course it's a horrible word (though here we use it as a slang term for cigarettes, which lends new meaning to the phrase "I'm gasping for a ***!") but like all, or nearly all words that cause offence, it's the context, the intent and the potential damage that I believe should be looked at before it's acted upon.

I like how you acknowledge that you lost your patience, which we all do sometimes, and you explained that you wished you hadn't responded as you did.

I feel the kind of courteous honesty and self-moderation you demonstrated by apologizing benefits the forum greatly and, the more often it happens among mods and members alike, might even encourage some missing posters to return.
