Thanks Jansz. Appreciated. However I'm not looking for people to join my fan club (special deal this week only! Half price!) but just wanted to defend my reputation, which was being trashed by YorkeDaddy, not something I'll allow anyone to do. If it had been a genuine misunderstanding then fine, but I pointed out several times the fact that I was not advocating either not welcoming noobs (yeah I'll keep using it; I see nothing wrong with it) or that they should not post in threads, but he completely ignored that and just continued to paint me as he wanted me to appear.

I tried to reason with him, I couldn't (I got called irrational????) and that's why he's now on Ignore, and will remain there.

To return to the actual subject, if anyone is interested, I wonder if a "welcome new members who we will certainly not call noobs" thread is any sort of an idea? Somewhere that new members can post and ask questions, get feedback, learn the ropes and so on? No? Okay, I'll be over here in the dark corner nursing my pint and muttering about the good old days...

Here's an example of the term "noob" being said with high respect, and a couple posts later being received with that understanding.

Urban Dictionary: noob

Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.

You're basically arguing against statistics using a personal situation, which by the way is an anecdotal fallacy.

I always thought noobs were new boobs, like a pre teen who just hit puberty or a dude who just gained a bunch of weight.

Not to be confused with man boobs, which are a more established male set of jugs.

Why do men have nipples, anyways?

Bro I already tried this, they're all resistant to the concept of context. They think that since they all use "noob" in a non-derogatory way here then that must mean it's not derogatory anywhere. This place is basically a middle school.

If this is a middle school, you are the guy that disrupts class because he can't be bothered with learning.

The guy that's applying concepts he's studied in college right now is the guy that "can't be bothered with learning"?

If anyone's being resistant to learning it's the people that are still trying to insist than noob can never be a derogatory term in any context.
