Are We Welcoming Enough To New People?

Right guys, continue your debate here if need be.

Trollheart 04-01-2014 03:16 PM

I'm fine. Happy to drop it. I just don't like being misrepresented or misquoted, is all.

You can have an agenda without it being political, obviously. You want to make it seem that I am specifying where noobs can and can't post, and that I'm being unwelcome to them, which is not true. That is an agenda. That would appear to be your agenda.

Gee you're right, I'm out to get you specifically which is why I have only argued this with you rather than everybody. You have, however, made it very clear that you don't think noobs should post in Spill Your Guts, which is first of all ridiculous and second of all it actually does suggest that you're trying to specify where noobs can and can't post.

Additionally, "noobs" is an inherently derogatory word on its own and I despise it. You may notice that I have never and will never use that word unless I'm actually addressing when someone else said it, like in the above paragraph.

As good a writer as Schulyer is I'm sure we would have noticed had he contributed to threads. What username did he use? Even so, all forums are going to have personalities that band together, know each other and have these in-jokes. It's not a crime, it doesn't or shouldn't make people feelunwelcome because nobody knows all the in-jokes. There are jokes go around that I don't have a clue about, as they refer to a time before I as a member, but it doesn't bother me.
You're right it's not a crime, which is exactly why I said "there's nothing inherently wrong with that" directly after. Anywhere that operates on cliques like this site is unwelcome just by default. This forum is like a high school, it's really difficult for people to fit in, as evidenced by how many new members there are versus how many of those members actually develop friendships and stick around. I don't know what else I should have to say about that.

Nothing is irrefutable. Now you sound like PowerPunisher (Nobody can deny this!) --- what a load of bollocks. Are you telling that the same ten members, in every subforum in every thread, drive every discussion? Falsehood.
Wow damn you got me, my generalization was very accurate but since there are some exceptions I'm just 100% wrong. For god sakes. There are only around twenty regular posters here, and if you go into basically any thread made in the past year, you will see one or multiple of those regulars in the conversation. Feel free to try and find me one exception and I will counter with fifty that prove my point.

I don't see what you think this is, a community project? It's a place for people to come and have a laugh, discuss music, meet up. It's not Utopia. What do you mean by growth? I hope you're not referring to those spammy penis-enlarging pills emails I get every bloody other hour!
What do I mean by growth? What kind of question is that? Why on earth would you not want as many members here as possible? We're on a music forum, where we want as many diverse opinions and backgrounds as possible so that we can explore every facet of music. The less members, the less possible places to draw from for more music. Why the hell do I have to explain that?

You never said who the person was so that's not an example as I don't know who you were talking about and how true it is.
Well this just suggests that you're not invested in this discussion enough to spend 10 seconds finding this answer. The member in question's name is Kartoffelbrei. Said member was extremely rudely chased off by a regular here, and you seemed to defend that, which is why I very reasonably assumed some things about your stance. I apologize, but chill the **** out. You're the one with the stance that comes off as intolerable, not me. I'm well aware that you're not actually intolerable, but the fact that you're trying to argue this with me so vehemently is really confusing to me and I have no idea why you would disagree, frankly.

You are on an internet forum saying you despise the word "noobs". Seriously dude?

Yes. I've even been a part of gaming communities and I never used the word or appreciated when others used it there either, and that's what the word was actually made for.

Why are we focusing on this? I don't find it offensive or anything but it's a pretty insulting word and it's silly and I don't ever use it. This is not like some shocking thing about me or about any person that might have the same view.

I wasn't aware anyone even considered it insulting.

YorkeDaddy 04-01-2014 03:52 PM

Do you guys have no clue what the origin of the word even is??

Urban Dictionary: noob

This was never meant to be some endearing term for people that are new somewhere. Maybe you guys don't see it that way here but in other communities it's definitely an insult and that's how I've always felt about it. When the word was first gaining popularity it was exclusively an insult in every context I had ever seen, but apparently here you're all just using it to refer to new people without any negative connotation for some reason.
