I think it's ridiculous to make claims that this site doesn't have heavy enough moderation; as if the act of actually ignoring something you don't like isn't enough, you can have the board help you with that as well. This effete, crybaby attitude will do nothing to encourage meaningful discussion.

Do you know of any effective ways to curtail this?

Sure, mods can stop getting involved in petty arguments and should only become involved (whether it be through infractions or more) when the behavior is disruptive to the site as a whole.

People should be penalized for responding to people who are clearly trolling. How about that solution? Because that is half of the problem.

I don't think it's possible to get rid of trolling on a board about music. Such a board will attract people with bizarre ideas, and as such rustling jimmies is inevitable.

Naturally it can't be prevented, but I think it can be mitigated by controlling how much attention, importance, and validation we give to trolls, because that's what they come for, and we give them every ounce of reinforcement.

And if people can't control their own behaviour, that's what moderators are for.

that's the thing, it's a bit subjective. Some people may see it as clearly trolling and some one will come along and not even realize that the person is trolling but you want to slap the wrist of the person that comes along and unknowingly responses to the person that's clearly trolling?

That's what discretion is for, and if you trust the moderators to use it under current circumstances, then new ones shouldn't be any different.

The first time a troll instigates an argument, let everyone involved off the hook. After 40 pages of quarreling or two months of bickering, people should know better than to fall prey to attention-seeking, deliberately argumentative behaviour.

If trolling is such a problem that it disrupts the environment, and manages to do so repeatedly and consistently, perhaps a different approach is worthwhile. Like, I don't know, not encouraging idiot behaviour by drawing it out or giving it attention.

I have to agree. The one or two incidents that we have had here is being blown completely out of proportion like this site is a drama filled wasteland and nothing can ever get done because drama drama drama and that's so far from the case.
