I prefer manuals too, but there are certain situations when an automatic is nice. Like when you're trying to parallel park on a hill in the city in the snow or when you're stuck in in stop-and-go traffic for a really long time.

Automatics are basically the norm here, but that feature is actually something you have to ask for when you buy the car, like asking for power windows or a DVD player. But like 90% of people here drive them, mostly because it's hard to drive a standard in a congested city, because you have to shift so much and it's frustrating at times. The other day I was downtown in my car, and shifted to a different gear an average of 5 times per block, which is not a large distance.

I've had 6 manual transmission vehicles in a row. My Honda Prelude was da bomb yo. 2-4 barrel carbs, 5 speed manual, that would smoke 5.0 Mustangs like snoop (read Beiber) smokes blunts.

I've never actually drove an automatic, it would be so bloody weird though. Just having a foot sit there, twiddling its thumbs. I think they would be good for hill starts and **** because you don't need to find your biting point or anything. I dunno why I actually prefer manuals though, just can't imagine driving without a clutch.

It is weird. My car is a manual and my wife's an automatic, and every time I drive hers there are definitely times when my foot goes for the clutch. And yeah, automatics are good for hills, especially when it comes to tight parallel parking on them.

By the way, the image of your foot twiddling its thumbs is hilarious.

Hell no one will be driving in 20 years anyway. Automatic shifting is one thing, how about automatic driving?

My mom's car is an automatic, and I drove it once and my left foot kept reaching for the clutch and I kept taking my hand off the wheel to shift. Not to mention that it was weird as hell to just put the car in motion and not do anything after that.

I've never parallel parked an automatic or started on a hill with it, but I get what you're saying.

I don't see the point in owning a manual unless (a) it's a sports car or (b) you do lots of towing/hauling. Unless you're stuck with some archaic 4 speed automatic the difference in mileage will be negligible, & with newer vehicles CVTs get better mileage.

I don't see the point in a lot of things, but they happen anyway...
