Any website that gets a lot of hits is worth advertising money. The more hits, the more valuable the website. Which is why I think the current owners are holding on to it. Letting it grow so they can flip it for more than they bought it for.

They only show up if you're not logged in.

The guy who founded the site was a guy called Rockefella Skank in 2003. He sold it to GregB who was one of the moderators after less than a year. He went on to run the place for another 3 or 4 years.

GregB sold the site to the current owners sometime in 2007, I remember seeing the sale on some site where you can buy & sell websites. If I remember correctly it was sold for around the region of $6000 which GregB used to fund a trip to Hawaii.

It was Murder Junkie who found out that little gem.

Interesting. There needs to be an MB history thread

How much money do you think this website brings in?

Probably doesn't bring in much, considering the small number of adverts for non-members. But it does grow in value as the site gains hits, so the money it costs to keep the site running is justified by the return when selling.

And how does it cost money to keep the site running? This is all confusing to me. I always wondered how to make a forum and if I could make one. But it seems there's more to it than I thought.

Well, I don't know exact amounts, but you have to consider that they pay the datacenter that has the servers that have the forum software and databases on them, and they own more than one site, all of which bring in heavy traffic, so bandwidth costs are going to be high... It's not something just anyone can afford at this level.
